Default 1->2 shift

Does anybody else have a problem on the 1-2 shift with the shifter popping out? I've only been driving a manual for the last week, so I think it has to do with my shift technique, kinda likeI'm not fully throwing it into 2nd?

I don't know; I'm just curious if anybody else had that problem and a way to rememdy it or exercise to practice to stop it from happening.

How to Improve Your Shifting

Then it's over to cleaning up the clutch fluid. Taking Care of Your Clutch

If that doesn't correct the issue, then try adjusting the shifter cradle: http://rpmtransmissions.com/files/c5...adjustment.pdf

If that doesn't resolve the issue, then you can change the tranny fluid. After that it's a service visit.

I'm going to give your drills a try; I practiced them in the air and they do seem a hell of a lot more solid to shift that way than the way I was before (using a "death grip")

Are you talking about normal driving or spirited? If the issue is normal driving, then how hard is it to get it into second? I mean, think about it, it should go in with minimal effort, I don't see how your are going to benefit from shifting drills if your driving under normal condition.

Anyone can shift a car into second gear regardless of experience, if it's popping out there may more to it than shifting technique or speed or hand position. Sound's more mechanical than enything else. I hope shifting drills fix your problem, but if it doesn't let us know how you make out.

Practied them a bit and I was okay today - what I think it was was that using my deathgrip I wasn't fully engaging second - i.e., so I'd catch it between the shift gates and it would pop out. Guess it just came down to 'practice practice practice'

Man, you must be a horrible driver if you are hitting the gate between 2&4th.
BTW, if you hit the gate, then it would have been a missed gear.
My lord, it's as simple as going straight down.

I'm glad it was that simple.

Well, the last time I drove a manual was in 1997; and then I think I had 30minutes actual seat time.

So blah :p

Since you're new to the car .... are you aware of CAGS, and has the car had a CAGS bypass installed or not ???

CAGS turns on that dash lamp that says you need to do a 1-4 shift, and will lock you out of second if the bypass is not installed.

CAGS is dead here

One thing that my wife has done a few times is not fully engage in the gear. the car will still go, but after a few seconds the shifter will pop out. Scares the **** out of her.

It terrified me quite a few times

But, all's good now - Ranger's advice on his page really helped set me straight - by using a 'death grip' on the shifter I had a lot of trouble getting into 2nd. Changing it up to a 'cupping' grip makes it slide nice and smoothly into gear.

Thanks Ranger for the write-up on your page!

Happy that did the trick for you, EFNFAST.

Small, simple technique adjustments often improve the drivability of these cars.

there should be a required reading section around here. I vote this makes it into that section. Just simple stuff that makes a person a better driver.
