driving my 03Z down freeway and adjusted my tilt wheel down a notch and all of a sudden DIC says "column lock service". pull over check and reset light. comes on anytime car turned off and key turned on. What happens is now my steering column never locks just like the cars with the "fix" I didn't have to even take it in for this "fix" anyway will go in later this week to see what is up. anyone ever had this problem and what was the " "GM" fix.
If there has been no recall work, and you are getting a column lock message, my guess is that the column lock actuator is stuck in the unlocked position.
The BCM knows it is safe to drive because it is unlocked, but if you do not hear the actuator cycle when you turn off the key, the actuator is not working.
If the actuator can stick open, I would be afraid that it will cycle, and the next time, it may stick with the column locked.. Then you are in real trouble..
I am thinking I had something similar happen, I got the message, but it did not lock, then I could not start my car. I was able to push start it and drive but it would not start with the key.
I took it in for the recall which happened to line up with this incedent, then when I got it back it locked up the wheel. I undid it and put in the bypass. F that stupid column lock

Do like Bill says............get the column lock bypass. Good Luck.>George
On my'98 I had the same problem. Got the "service column lock" message one day and from that day on the column would never lock. It was like that for quite a while with no other problems. However, just to be on the safe side, eventually I put in the bypass kit to prevent a problem from occurring one day.
Don't even bother taking it in, your battery is low. It does not have the power to react fast enough for the computer and you get the false message. I just went through the same thing.

This was the same issue I had with column lock failure, low battery. I had left a cell phone charger plugged in and just the draw for the diode that shows connection being left for a week drained the battery enough that it "locked". After recharging and "unlocking the column", it has not occurred since.
