have a 2004 a4 coupe and noticed today that when i was filling the tank that fuel is dripping from the bottom of the car. hadn't overflowed yet ( only 8 gals when it would hold 14). This is the second time this has happened. can anybody point me in the right direction? Tried to search but all i got was a bunch of threads about the fuel smell in c3's and fuel filters on 98's. Thanks, Dave
Where is the dripping coming from? Under the filler? At the center of the car?
If under the filler, you can eye-ball the filler hose (and, IIRC, a vent hose) by removing the left rear inner fender liner (pull the wheel, and then a bunch of screws about the periphery of the liner. You can then see if there's any obvious leak trails in there.
If so - it is possible that the connector ring was either installed incorrectly, or has become loose.
The Vette will still operate with it loose - but may have become prone to having to crank the engine over a few times to start.
At some point the fitting will fail - if you are driving the Vette this can result in serious and dire consequences.
The fuel will continue to spew (from the fuel pump action), and since the location of the fuel 'leaking' is right close to the exhaust system you can find yourself involved in a fire!
Stealerships - for some reason - sometimes fail to install the NEW connector, or the tech can break the connector upon installation.

BEWARE
Good advice, advice you should heed. This is not the normal possible fuel tank problem. Pay attention to this immediately.
There is a silent recall on this. The fuel filler hose needs to be replaced, mostly because it does not let the tank fill all the way. It clicks off when the tank is not full. Check with your dealer on this. David

got a look at this today in the shop, and looks like it is coming from the line that connects the two tanks. at any rate, i will have to drop the tanks to see exactly where this is coming from. evidently it doesn't leak only when filling but now any time the car is running. sucks, i was gonna have fun blowing the tires off this weekend at cruising the coast, where the police wil let it slide . nows the perfect time to upgrade the fuel pumps for the inevitable nitrous shot. i'll update when i find out the exact culprit. thanks for the responses.

Do a search for my posts on a leaky fuel tank. I have a 2004 A4 also. Last year I needed to have the driver's side tank replaced because it was leaking gas. If you look under the driver's side of the car you'll probably see a liquid dripping from the metal gas tank shields. At the time I looked into it, there were wuite a few failures going on with both 2004 Vettes and Caddilacs XLR's because GM had changed the tank configuration to meet gov't requirements.
My 04 had a left fuel tank leak at cross over hose flange. Replaced tank. Where the hose connected to the tank was out of round.
Thats exactly where mine looks like its leaking, how much did it run you to fix and did you ever get an explanation as to how this got out of round?
Dave
There was a series of bad ones from the manufacturer. I had mine done under an aftermarket warranty at Corvettes of Houston. But it was the first time they had seen that problem, so they only replaced a seal first... and had to do the work again the following week when I took it back.
My 04 leaked also. WARNING: If you park in the garage and have an open flame source like a water heater in the garage like I do take the car out of the garage. I am luck my house did not blow up. The gas odor was really strong.
Dave, I sent you a pm with the link to my old post. Looks like most posts before April 2007 went into the archives - at least the ones I was looking for.
old thread, just bumping it to let 04 people's know the outcome of this. had to have the fuel tank on the driver's side replaced and no more fuel leak. saw the tank after the dealer pulled it and there was no obvious crack, but it was definitely wet on top of the tank. total bill $1600 including tax
