not sure if anyone has ever managed to do that, they code it to one vin number b/c it stores all the stock info in the unit's flash. I'm sure some pro-hacker could figure it out though, but they don't drive cool cars cuz they don't care so I doubt its ever been done.
In a few years I'll graduate, then get a masters in security engineering. At that point I should be able to tell you . As for right now, though, all I can say is...find someone who knows this stuff better than me.
How do you get a programmer like the predator and the hypertech unlocked? And how much would it cost?
I know to "unlock" my predator before I sold it, I had to re-install the stock tune into my car. It then unlocked it and allowed it to be used in another car. OR you can send it to Dablosport and for $80 (i think), they will unlock it
I have experience with the Predator. It depends on the model/software version. I got mine in 2003 and back then it locked to the original VIN. After doing more upgrades I was having the car dyno tuned so didn't need the predator anymore and sold it. The keys to having it unlocked are:
1) Must have the "predator tune" put back into the device. If you try and send it back to Diablosport with a stock tune loaded into the device they will NOT unlock it.
2) You must call or email Diablosport for a return authorization code to ship it back to them.
3) If you have the original receipt from purchase (in my case I had the receipt from Mid America where I bought mine) they will not charge you to unlock it. They also load the updated software into it.
4) If you bought it from someone else and don't have the original purchase receipt, Diablosport will charge $100 (may have gone up) to unlock it and load the updated software into it.
The updated software (and some newer versions already have this installed) allows it to automatically unlock from a specific VIN. It locks itself to your car while the Predator Tune is in your car (and your stock tune is in the predator) but once you swap them back out (and put the Predator tune back in the device) it can then be used by someone else on a different VIN.
Hope this helps. I found their contact information/address/request for return authorization information in the FAQ section of the Diablosport website.
So basically if I buy a used one that hasn't been unlocked then I might as well add $100 to the purchase price plus the cost of shipping it in and hassle of it all. Thanks for the info.

Don't know about Predator but if you buy a locked Hypertech you will not be able to get Hypertech to Unlock it. I had one a while back and it froze during programming. It did however lock in the VIN#.
The store would not take it back because VIN# was locked in. Hypertech would not unlock it for me even though I:
Sent the unit to Hypertech
Copy of my receipt
Copy of my registration to prove VIN#
They just said too bad I had to buy a new one.
I told them to stuff their Hypertech and don't even bother sending it back.
