Default Need Advice!

Hey guys I just want to see what you think about this. I bought a hypertech power programmer from a forum member here a while back and everything went fine and the programmer worked great for me. But i have now sold the car and didn't need the programmer so i sold it on the forum to a new member. He gets the programmer and he emails me wanting to know how to use it. I walk him through and he says it doesn't work. I tell him to call hypertech so that they can help him. I didn't hear back from him for 3 weeks and now he is emailing me and saying that it still doesn't work and that he wants a refund. Hmmm, I have heard of guys doing this before where they will program their car and then say it doesn't work so that they get a refund but keep the program in the car. I asked him what happened and he said that it started to upload his VIN and then an error came up and now it won't let him start over because he started to upload a vin and now it wont clear. So this seems really fishy to me, and especially since it is a new member.

I was not the orignal buyer of the hypertech programmer so I can't send it back as a warranty to get it fixed if i do refund his money. Maybe someone out there that has bought a 2000 hypertech programmer could help, I dont know. This is just really bothering me because I want to do what is right but I KNOW that it was working great when i sold it to him and now he admits that he has his VIN programmed in and I woudln't be able to sell it to anyone else if I do refund his money. What would you do?

I'd call Hypertech and ask them if the unit it locked to the VIN.

I have a Diablo, and for me to sell it, I'd have to pay a few bucks to unlock/clear the memory.

This *may* be his problem.

I had the same problem with a POS Hypertech programmer I bought. Vette is a 2004.
The programmer was the correct Part #.
It locked up when programming but still stored my VIN#. I called Hypertech and they told me that the part # was RIGHT but the VERSION# was NOT RIGHT.

I took it to the place I bought it and they would not take it back because it had a VIN # stored.

I sent it to Hypertech with my receipt and a copy of my registration and DL to prove to them I was the owner of the vehicle etc.

They told me too bad. It had a VIN# stored and they would not unlock it. They told me all I could do was buy a new 1.

Never guess what it told them.

To answer your question. Yes if he has a later model C5 this can happen.

Wow, thats crazy that hypertech wouldn't take it back! I guess they dont stand behind their product! The programmer always worked great for me and the guy I got it from. I guess I won't ever buy hypertech again if they dont stand behind what they make.

if you did not deprogram your car before selling the programmer then that programmer is locked to your old car and you should refund the guy his money

If as you said this guy now admits his vin is in the programmer then give him the finger for trying to rip you off

What year C5 is the buyer trying to program? If it's a later model it may not have the correct VERSION #. That's the problem I had. Refer to my post above.

I think that is bullsh!t that you would try to pull the "new member" crap. I am a hard working 23 year old who has done many positive transactions on this forum with many members, and NEVER have a problem. I am not the person to try and rip someone off at all. I have sold plates, exhaust, covers, cd decks, etc. ALL with happy transactions. I bought this programmer from hunnicuttz and he LACKED to tell me that the programmer had been updated, (hence the bottom TORN off) which is why it is NOT compatible with my car. The programmer is STILL in working condition, but will not work with my car. I am NOT trying to rip anyone off, I have loved being a member of this forum and have too much dignity to pull some bullsh!t like this. $140 is nothing to me, as I have done very well for myself because I work so hard, but when I spend $140 on something that WASNT correctly described in the sale (about the programmer being updated with a big hole in the bottom) then I will raise a fuss, because I would not pull that crap with anyone else on here. Take this as you will, but I am not some lowball trying to make a quick buck, I am just another loyal corvette owner who enjoys the sales and discussions of this forum.

If the programmer is still in working condition I will refund your money but if your VIN is in there I will not. I dont have a problem sending your money back but you had told me that when it was uploading your vin that something happend and your vin was still in there. If the vin is still in the programmer then it is no good and is not fair for me to accept it back because it wouldn't have any value. If it is in the same condition as i sold it to you we can work it out with no issues. I'm just trying to be fair to both of us and I am not going to get ripped off on here again!

I'd want my money back too! But not even dealers of most new elec. devices will refund $$ for any reason! It's buyer beware, unfortunately.

Your right, but I dont have a problem refunding his money if his vin isn't uploaded to it. I have had these before and I know this one was in perfect working order when i shipped it and if for some reason it just doesn't work on his car and the programmer isn't affected in anyway from it I will gladly refund his money.

That is fine, but I have no way of telling what the programmer has done. All I know is that nothing has been downloaded to my car. This whole problem started with the programmer being updated. With that update (which I was NOT informed of) it is no longer compatible with my car. Only after calling hypertech and re-contacting the seller did I FINALLY find out that the programmer had been tampered with.

Based on that single FACT of misrepresentation of the product sold to me do I want my full refund. I understand things dont always work or look the greatest when bought used. But on here as both a buyer and seller, I think it is only fair to describe the product being sold to 100% of the seller's knowledge and NOT leaving out important info. like this programmer being updated.

I already told you that I will refund your money since the vin hasn't been uploaded, I dont see what the problem is.

Just as I thought, I refunded him his money and I got the programmer back with his VIN uploaded! I guess I should of trusted my gut. I'm not ever going to sell one of these programmers online again. Its just too easy for people to rip you off on these!
