I agree with both things you said. Actually had experience in a number of Vettes. But a C5 really moved the bar up a few notches. Wish I had driven one sooner, and got one myself sooner.
I got my first Vette at age 21 and later got married... entered the world of 4 door sedans, baby strollers, mini-vans (the wife HAD to have one ), etc. FINALLY, after more than 20 years of torture, I got back to a Vette. Yeah, I have regrets:
1. I regret that I was not well-heeled enough to have a Vette during all those baby-making years.
2. I regret not keeping my first Vette, a red '63 ragtop.

Other than those two, no regrets.
Sounds like me except i had a 1961 Ragtop when i was 19. Had no place to keep it when drafted into the Army in 1968. Had a new 350 crate engine, muncie four speed, hooker headers, racer brown cam, Edlebrock aluminum manifold, and a quadrajet carb. Scared the holy $hit out of me more than a few times. Took me 36 years to finally get another Vette. Each time i latch the softop up in my C5 Twin Turbo it's like i'm going back in time and remembering when i used to latch the 61 .
The '61 sounds fun! Mine was a 327 with fuelie heads (though it was not fuel injected), Isky 3/4 race cam, 13.5/1 compression racing pistons, Edlebrock aluminum high-rise manifold topped with a Holly double pumper (650 cfm, as I recall). Crager SS mags, 4.11 gears and Hurst Competition Plus shifter. That little car could really fly! I'd say not as fast as your TT though!
I regret not getting my Vette sooner but other than that I could not be happier.
My husband I think this is the best thing that we have bought next to our house.
