Hey everyone, this is my first post so please be easy on me if I asking a question hundreds of people have already asked. I own a 04 Z06 and don't know how strong it really is. I have looked everywhere to see if anyone could tell me how strong the rear differential actually is. If I took it to the drag strip and used slicks am I going to burn the clutch out first or is the rear gears going to crumble. I dont want to drag race all the time but maybe once or twice to see what my car can do. Its bone stock now besides corsa exhaust. I would like to add some performance mods slowly and maybe get up around 550rwhp. What parts will fail on me first?
left axle shaft is a weak link, follow rangers tips on drag racing and you should be ok, look in search for ranger and you will get more info than you ever dreamed of, good luck.
Clutch.....rear end/tranny joint prone to cracking with higher hp number....dte brace will help fix that.....axle shafts....and run flats just suck for racing
Well the entire drivetrain is a weak link, everything from the clutch to the rear has been know to break. And adding more HP will only make the chances greater, but hey if it breaks there are a lot of good aftermarket options that are a lot stronger.
C5Z06 is a very, very stout and reliable car. I owned two in which I made 500 drag strip passes at stock power levels (most on DRs) and never broke anything.
Remaining trouble-free depends on avoiding the classic driver errors that provoke wheel hop, slipping the clutch significantly, failing to maintain the clutch fluid, or missing shifts due to poor technique.
You will do yourself and your wallet a huge favor by perfecting your driving before adding mods that produce more rwhp.
There are some links in my signature to technique write-ups.
^ Listen to Ranger... these cars are very stout and the trans/diff are very strong.
With high power levels on stickey tires you can break the driver's side output shaft (not 1/2 shaft), and some people have cracked the trans output shaft or the case from having the trans/dif twist against each other.
Most who do moderate drag racing get a hardened output shaft (in the differential) and the DTE trans brace.
Keep up with swapping your clutch fluid in the reservoir or the pedal will start to get stickey.
Thanks for all the good advise that puts my mind at ease. I want to be able to drive the car hard and not break anything. Or at least know when to let off before something does goes. Thanks for all the advise everyone. Can't wait for the DVD to come out Ranger, thanks for all the tips on your website. Very Impressed.....

My 03 Z has 54k trouble-free miles. It's been on several long distance trips with another one in a few weeks. I use it to commute to work and it's also been down the drag strip several times. Unless you do major power adding it should hold up fine. BTW, my car's also mildly modded.
