No big difference except hud, also had 400+hp, were just underated and gave chevy a gimmick for the 02 model the sodium filled valves, no screens in the MAF and a cam change so small(anybody look at the cam specs? LOL!) made no difference maybe a couple of HP. I ran 12.3 at 115 stock in my 01. If you plan on doing mods get the 01, and do a heads and cam, you'll have an easy 400 at the wheels. If it was an oil burner the engine is opened up anyway so have the rings replaced. The oil burning cars were not a big deal anyway, just made for a looser engine, which is a faster engine.

show me an 01 without heads or cam putting down as much as my 03. I'll bet you can't find higher than 385,and when you do heads and cam the engine is not "opened up", since when can you change piston rings from the top? guess your theory is shot If you are going to do heads and cam then buy whatever car you like the most. If I had it to do again, I would buy a salvage, since I'm going to pretty much rip every damn piece of this car off eventually anyway. Buy whatever car you like the best. For me I never even considered an 01, maybe if I was buying another car today I would. I'd probably get a SW for rarity.

Actually, you open up the bottom and you can slide the rods and pistons out of the top . We're talking 20 hp here...............whoopdie doo.
Yeah, but that involves removing the oil pan, dis-assembling the rods, and pulling them up from the top, that is not something done during a head job. and it's still a bit of work.
Correction................it can be done during the heads for a little more work. And if you are capable of doing a heads job yourself, it shouldn't be a problem to tear into a bottom end. And the satisfaction of touching a whole motor with your own hands is priceless.

That's the way the dealers were told to pull the pistons for the re-ring warranty work on the LSx engines that were oil burners. GM didn't want them pulling the engine from the car ... so they were told to drop the oil pan and pull the pistons out the top. Quicker that way than pulling the whole engine.

i happen to like the 01Z's Z06 badges better. i personally don't like any car to display the engine's output. the 01Z's LS6 only has a measly 385hp/385 ft-lbs and they didn't display that on the car anywhere. i like that.
