Default ...some new questions?...

As a newbie, I've found google (google'n the CF) a great tool for my inquisitive mind on lots of questions, however these 4 I'm going to post to the CF masses.

1. If any, how much over the speed limit do you go in town, and on open road knowing if police clocked you they'd let you off, or not pursue a ticket?

As a MagRedVert owner, I agree with my wife. I suspect I'd get a ticket over someone else doing the same speed. A 55 speed limit sign means you should be at 55 when you pass the sign, then 45mph, 35, 25. if I want to get someplace fast, I'll take our Honda. (I don't want to get a radar detector). Do these support police contribution badges I see attached to lic plates help detour tickets?

2. Other than on a track, what has been the fastest you've peg'd the speedometer? What is the best time and place to flex this engineered muscle?

3. Vert owners do you leave the top down when, say eating at a restaurant, or shopping? Have you regretted leaving the top down while parked a short time. (somewhat related great read) - http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show....php?t=1144848

4. Regarding the question above, have you accidently, left the top down and it rained, no downpour'd, & needless to say the inside is drenched?

I'll take a stab at these questions ...
1) In town, the posted limit rules. I use my cruise control "LOTS" just to keep me at the posted limit. Unless everyone else is going faster I don't go over 3-4 mph over when by myself.

Get a radar detector - give it a name and use it ... "Roxy" has saved me many times. But she works best when I am not by myself.

2) Cruised from Indianapolis to western Montana this summer and found a lonely streach where I found 126 for a short time. I had room to go, but there arn't many roads worthy of over 100 mph speeds out there.

3) I never leave the top off unless I will be able to see her while I am in the resturant. Even with the windows up. It just takes a second to put top on and I feel like it always better to be safe rather than sorry.

4) Yes I did get caught in a down pour once, but opted to drive the 5 minutes to my garage - rather than putting the top on, on the side of the road. It was really OK till I had to stop at a light. Not sure if I will make the same decision next time

I pretty much stick to the speed limit in town, but usually go about 5 over on the open road.

Fastest I've had mine is 111 mph.

While I have a coupe, I never leave the top off when I am not staying with the car.

1. In town, zero. Highway, 5 to 10 over depending upon traffic.

2.

3. Always put to top up when away from the car (except when in a car show).

4. Never happened.

I agree with most others.
I'll add that when parked inside garage I put the topup with/without dust cover. I also leave it unlatched with the windows down away from the rubber along the top (1/2" or so). I feel that if you keep it latched all the time it will stretch. Most of my long trips have been with top up and even raining. It still fits tight and quiet.
Get a window valet if makes life simple

After a few tickets and some friends who are traffic cops I subscribe fully to the "9 your fine 10 your mine" rule of thumb 99% of the time in town and on the highway when in known areas. If i'm somewhere I don't know anything about, posted limits.

The color probably doesn't matter. When i had my black eclipse, me and a red vert were doing 80 on the highway. I got pulled over and not him. Cops care only about their quota, they could care less about who it is or what it is they pull over. Top speed 141. There usually isn't a day my vette doesn't see 100 mph. The way I see it, doing the speed limit is like an olympic runner only running at half his or her maximum speed.

Default thanks for the replies

well...I suspect I need to put the top up more often than not when parked.

Yes to the valet (windows up...I got in on a group purchase last week...roughly $20 savings).

Ok...9 over limit on open road...cool.

oldad, Thanks for the advise about not clamping the top in place, and leaving the windows down 1/2" off the rubber.

I know most do not drive in the rain, so I've got to check the weather forecast!

To answer the Vert questions

I put the top up if I'm leaving the car for more than 5 minutes. If its out of sight I get nervous. that said, the Vert is almost unique in my part of Lincolnshire so people seem to treat it with amazing respect. I still worry about things on the back shelf that could be picked out easily such as CDs.

The last question is also why I don't leave the roof down. It rains endlessly in England. Normally as a weekend car I leave it in the garage if its going to rain. Recently I've had to use the Vert as a DD so the roof has been down even on cool mornings. it goes straight back up when I get to work. My parking spot is under a tree so my biggest concern is pigeon poop into the cockpit Its also horse chestnut time and I've found a few lodged in the wipers. Dont want those inside Never been caught out by the rain. But never say never................

1. If any, how much over the speed limit do you go in town, and on open road knowing if police clocked you they'd let you off, or not pursue a ticket? It's purely officer discretion, highways are usually 11 mph over or higher warrant a stop. But technically, you can be stopped for 1 mph over...ticketted, probably not. As long as conditions are safe, and the speed isn't extreme, your chances are good. My personal rules... don't speed in town, don't speed at night, don't speed through construction

As a MagRedVert owner, I agree with my wife. I suspect I'd get a ticket over someone else doing the same speed. Do these support police contribution badges I see attached to lic plates help detour tickets? Not usually, if you are speeding or generally being unsafe, you will get cited.

2. Other than on a track, what has been the fastest you've peg'd the speedometer? What is the best time and place to flex this engineered muscle? I plead the 5th on the first question To the second, stick to roadways that are long and open and that you KNOW well. Do not do this on roadways that have driveways, intersections or any place where traffic can pull out. The best time is when you can see well ahead of where you are going, so any time it isn't dark... wildlife likes to dart across roads too.

3. Vert owners do you leave the top down when, say eating at a restaurant, or shopping? Have you regretted leaving the top down while parked a short time. (somewhat related great read) - http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show....php?t=1144848I have a coupe, so the top comes off. I always put the top back on unless I can SEE the car from wherever I am. Leaving the top open while shopping or whatever places too much trust in the general public... (these are the same people talking on phones cutting you off in their SUV... no thanks)

4. Regarding the question above, have you accidently, left the top down and it rained, no downpour'd, & needless to say the inside is drenched? Kind of hard to forget to put a coupe top back on, so no. Needless to say 90% of the time, I'm in hardtop mode.

I have a coupe, never leave the top off when I'm not around.

fastest is about 135-140...

in town I watch my speed due to the bad conditions of the roads, generally drive about 38-42 mph, sometimes much slower with the road conditions. (and school zones) in LA the roads are very very bad. most of my real fun driving takes place out in the sticks. the roads are much better and no cops.

the hi-ways I usual drive between 65-76 depending on the speed limit, and when I hit little 'townships', I go to the posted speed and watch for bad roads again.

I never speed or abuse my car on the street because it isn't allowed on this forum. I bought my car strictly for it's looks.

In the strict towns by me exactly the limit. On the highway no more than 9 over. Top speed so far upper 80's (yea I know you think I'm full of it) The only place I leave the top down unattended is a Corvette show or in the garage.

1. Get a radar detector, at least then you know when your being painted by radar and can adjust your speed accordingly. Any hi-perf vehicle is going to cause more scrutiny. I usually stay near the speed limit so it easy to make a quick adjustment to be law abiding. Although mag red will capture attention no denying it.

2. 120, it happened very quickly during a full throttle pass. Backed off and slowed back down!

3. Only if I'm going in for a moment and then rollup windows. (Also depends on where that is too, someplaces no, I just put the top back up only takes 2 minutes.

4. No! If it even looks like rain or lots of low clouds I put the top back up. Never want to chance it.
