About 50% of the time my seat will not automatically adjust. I put the key in and close the door, or I close the door and then put the key in, and about half the time, I got to push my #1 position botton to bring the seat into position - WHY?
I had the same problem until I realized the seat only automatically adjusts if your doors are locked then unlocked. If they're left unlocked and you get in and put the key in, nothing iwll happen.
You would think one would check your owner's manual on this subject, but it's alot easier for some to chime in and complain about the General's poor quality instead of giving the proper advise on the subject ,(unfortunately)
This is pretty funny - i'm not alone. I so often get in my car from not being locked and never put the sequence of events together. I'll now try the unlock button twice - So mr bumble - what page of the owners manual is this documented?

I just did a little experiment with my car, and the seat memory works regardless of whether the door was locked when you left the car or not.
Mine also does the same thing. I think it has something to do with how fast you pull the key out of the ignition. I think it's looking for some transient in the circuit as the resistor moves past the sensor. That's only a guess, but it seems to be the difference in my car.
Do you have it programmed for the "easy exit" feature where the seat moves all the way back on removing the key from the ignition? I used to have this enabled and the seat always adjusted properly. After I disabled that feature it now forgets sometimes and the seat remains in the position it was last in. Which is painful since my wife is about 10" shorter than me ;-)
I only hit my unlock once to get it to go into place, whether it was locked in the first place or not.
It's all part of the ritual when getting in and starting my car..........along with pushing TC off and then the reset button for the DIC

i never understood why guys turn TC off. I can't get my rear tires to last more than 9,000 miles as it is!
With few data points - the mistory appears to be solved. So when I get into my garaged parked car with the keys in the shifter boot, get in my car, lock the doors, open the door, close the door, and insert key. The seat appears to go into set position every time. Or, simply get in the car and push botton # 1.
