I'm installing my XM equipment and I want to remove the escutcheon that covers the radio/A.C./ignition switch/shifter. Does it just pull off, or is there some secret to removing it? My ultimate goal is to access the antenna cable where it fits into the radio.
I helped a C-5 owner do his HUD install. To remove that radio surround you start with the removal of the console first. then the part with the active handling part is removed then the radio surround can be accessed for removal. I took pictures and I can see about attaching them for you in a later post here. I have an XM myself and when I attached my input to the sound system I actually attached where the electric antenna hooks into the cable back in the trunk and behind the carpet, it was real easy hooking in there and the XM works great going through the FM. Hope this helps.
Remove the console and lid first then you remove that other piece with the active handling and suspension controls. then you can access the bolts to remove the radio surround. Good Luck
Be very careful removing the panel for the HVAC temperature sensor. This is that rounded square hole next to the ignition switch. You have to carefully remove the cover and take care not to harm the sensor, then there is a screw behind it.
Both tips were very helpful. Thanks! The XM installation instructions specifically recommend against installing the antenna on top of the dash by the corner of the windshield. Where did you install yours?
Don't tell anyone here on the Forum, but I used some hot glue and stuck the antenna to the convertible top boot cover. I applied some hot glue to the inside of my car door just to test and make sure that the glue wouldn't hurt the paint. Of course my son had fit over the fact that his dad did that.
I'll keep it between just us!
The XM Commander's antenna has a strong magnet built into it. If you put an equal sized piece of metal or another magnet on the opposite side of the body, it will stay on the fiberglass without the need for glue. Putting the antenna aft means having to fish the wire through the whole car. I'll try the windshield first and see how it works.
Thanks!
