Let me clear up a few things. I DID want to drive it, but since it didn't have a plate or registration, I COULDN'T drive it. My idea was to have the guy verify my employment in law enforcement. Next I wanted HIM or his bank rep to call my bank rep and verify that the bank check was real. If this wasn't good with him, I wanted to wire the money direct and he said this would cost him money.
I toyed with the idea of opening an account at his bank, but he wouldn't tell me his bank. I was also worried about IRS suspicion by opening an account and closing it in a week or so.
I really think that he was spooked by some advice from his lawyer, who apparently told him that cash is the only 100% method. I also think that a dealer came along and offered him more money.
Any way, I cant even get him on the phone.
My ideas were:
1) Have the guy verify my employment in law enforcement.
2) I wanted HIM or his bank rep to call my bank rep and verify that the bank check was real.
3) I wanted to wire the money direct and he said this would cost him money.
4) I was also worried about IRS suspicion by opening an account and closing it in a week or so.
1) Sadly "in law enforcement" doesn't make much difference anymore.
2) I wouldn't do that either.
3) Why didn't you offer to pay his costs (although the recipient doesn't incur transfer costs in a wire transfer)
4) So what? You got something to hide?
How about Paypal! Easiest way I know to send money around the world.

Not smart to carry that much cash. Kid here in Texas drove from Waco to Dallas to buy a car. He was Robbed and Killed for the cash. Just my .02 cents worth.
Or you get stopped & cops want to know why you've got that much cash and seize it as drug money. You may be OK if you are in law enforcement, but it is generally not wise. I get nervous when I have over 1K.
Another alternative is postal money orders. Max of $1000 per money order for $1.50. Get them locally before you leave and meet him at his post office and cash them in. Your safe while traveling and he gets his cash.

something stinks here. It really sounds like a scam to me.Did he show you a title for the car? Where did you meet him at his home? Who is this third party broker? Was the price of the car inline or to good to be true?Whats the connection to EBAY? Do you feel like its legit or does the hair on the back of your neck stand up?
Scams like this go down every day!!!!!!! If it doesnt feel right it probably isnt.Steve

Anybody that won't accept a wire transfer is reason to run away. My business sends and receives wire transfers every day as it's the one scam/fool proof way to transfer money, and can be verified within minutes.

bank to bank wire transfer is the best way to go. If he won't accept that he is scamming you
Not particularly related to this thread, but if you or the bank makes a mistake in the routing or account number, your money could get tied up for about 30 days. Sometimes, someone reverses the routing and account number.
