Default garage floor

Doing a total remake of my garage and I will post pictures when I am finished. My main problem I cannot decide what to do with the floor, I like the idea of the checker board look with the rubber tiles but here in Canada we have a lot of muck falling off our fenders.Half of the garage will be my precious C5 but the other half is my daily driver. Does that water and snow seep in between the cracks of these tiles would appreciate any input

I am planning to do a paint system from Lowes or Home Depot. Have had the checkered tiles...and they look good....but don't really hold up long term. You could also go with a racedeck type flooring. The paint system calls for some intense cleaning first...which is the key. Hoping to start this week.

I can tell you that the most durable and dependable floor for a garage is a two-part epoxy paint. I put one down when I built my motorcycle shop in 1999 (in the service area). This floor sees a lot of traffic, tool boxes rolling around, lifts being dragged around, gas & oil spills, tools being dropped...you name it. This floor sees service work six days a week. It is just starting to show wear at two of the four mechanics stations, and will probably get repainted in the spring. This is commercial grade epoxy and is fairly expensive...probably about $.75-$1.00 per square foot (not including any prep work). I had it done on my 3 car garage in 2001, and it was about $600. Some of the less expensive DIY versions would probably work fine for residential use. The secret is doing the proper prep work. It has to be absolutely clean and dry to work.
My 2 cents worth...Good luck.

That sounds like what I would like. Did you have a regular professional painter do the work?

This is something you can probably do yourself. I did mine this spring and it is all about the prep work. I used H&C Shield Crete from Sherwin Williams Paint.

(1) Simple Green and power wash.
(2) Acid etch / degreaser (purchased at Lowes) and power wash
(3) Next day: Acid etch and power wash again
(4) Rented a stand up floor buffer/sander. Sanded with 100 grit paper and power washed.
(5) Used the degreaser that comes with the H&C kit and power washed
(6) Let the floor dry for 48 hours. No parking in garage.
(7) The H&C kit comes with 2-part epoxy that is mixed together with a paint paddle on a drill. You will need help with this step, you only have about 2 hours of pot time once they are mixed so be set up and have everything ready. Mine was a shade under 1,000 square feet so plan accordingly. Follow directions, install flakes and let dry 48 hours.
(8) I installed 2 coats of clear sealer to mine for added protection.
(9) Let everything dry 3 to 4 days and you are good to go.

It looks great and is easy to keep clean. Not a weekend job the prep and cleaning is where it is at. Cost for everything to do mine was about 700.00 +- for about 1,000 square feet. Mark

I did mine in 100% epoxy no solvents. No specks in it. Very easy to find those tiny parts you drop. Easy to clean. Chemical resistant. Epoxy cost $500 for 900 sq ft. Did it myself and it was a little difficult to handle.

Default Racedeck tile

I went with a Racedeck tile. My boys and I did it in about 2 1/2 hours. Simple yet the design I wanted. Not sure how it would hold in your part of the world. We are still waiting for some edges and a parking tile that fits right in. Here are some photos.

I elected to go with roll sheet vinyl, commercial thickness in coin pattern, in three separate rolls due to the custom sizes I needed (1,815 sf). It was down in two hours after truck delivery. It's easy to clean. It smells good. It comes in different patterns, thicknesses and colors. The only place water or snow can get through is at the over lapped 4" seams. I can take it with me when I move.
The only downside so far is that hot tires with tire dressing can leave a dark stain.

What are you planning for the edges, on the left and right sides? Are you trimming the 1 foot squares?

I just received the edges yesterday....they are a little bigger than the one on the entrance. I have use the one I recived because the corner pieces will not play nice with the the current edges..
Will post photos next week If I finish it.

Here are some more examples of Race Deck. I installed it in about 5 hours. I am a slow worker and it was in the low 90's that day. I am very pleased with results. Good luck with your floor.

I did have a pro do mine, but I did my basement myself with Rustoleum brand, and it came out great. If you're handy doing that kind of stuff, it should be easy. Again, the secret is in the prep work.
