Default First oil change

Welp, my first oil change since I bought her was completed today. After some forum searching (yes people...I do know now that there is a search feature here... ), I decided to go Royal Purple after being a die hard Mobil-1 Synthetic fan. Put 10w-30 in her (71k miles) and I couldn't be happier! I then took her for a 60 mile total trip of the I-15 to let this stuff soak in.

Awesome oil. I'll be sticking to this from now on.

And for good measure....

It'd be good to get an analysis done at the next change and post up some data

Its one of those topics thats always short on facts to support the different oil types.

How can the average driver tell any difference between one oil versus another oil when they have no technical equipment? I've had cars that used everything from 5W-30 to 20-50 and I couldn't tell you anything about the oil except that its going to get dirty, again.

You'll know if you used the wrong kind of oil right away

I really doesn't matter what brand of oil you use as long as it meets factory specs (Royal Purple does) or it supports your specific application of major modifications.

To the OP: if you are happy with the switch, more power to ya

I used conventional (Dino) oil in my 2000 Z-28 (LS1 engine) and never had a problem, it never used any oil and engine was perfect when I sold it at 35000 miles. Have used Synthetic Oil in my Y2K C-5 since new, it has over 93,000 on it ,runs great and uses 1 qt between changes which I do when the DIC is at 10%. I ran both cars at the Drags on occasion. I always make sure the oil meets GM spec. and get whatever is on sale. Corvette owners maintain their cars better than the average Joe so always want to use good products but don't be fooled by marketing hype. Humm,I wonder if J.C. Whitney still sells those Spark plugs that increase HP by 25%

We have seen to many bearing failures with RP. M1 is used in our drag only Alky motors and although there are plenty that equal it, we have found nothing to exceed it.

RP will net slightly more HP since it sheets off the metal parts so fast, but the trade-off is protection.

If used in extreme racing conditions the RP needs to be changed after every race. (in Pro-Stock every run).

Hello T.
I used to use M1 when I was changing oil myself but have been using Valvoline Synthetic for over a year now. They are careful with the car )Pit -no Lift) and let it fully drain and don't over torque the Bolt. V meets GM spec.-See you at next CC if I don't croak first.

Hi TimeCr0ss -

Nice pic!!

I switched to RP in all of my cars (02 Z, 99 coupe, 06 Colorado and 07 Impala SS).

Even though some people on this board told me that I could not possibly be able to tell - I am consistently getting just under 2 mpg better mileage in my truck with the RP.

I agree that this topic has been beat to death, resuscitated and then beat to death again.

I did my own research and chose the RP 5w30 - I am not using the racing oil that TLewis4095 mentioned.

I would ask TLewis4095 - is your experience with bearing failures based on using the RP 5w30 oil that is rated and would be a viable oil under the GM factory warranty?

I switched because I believe that Mobil1, when it changed formulation to the "syntec" formula, started being made with a cheaper base oil stock. This was based on information I was able to gather - but Mobil1 will not verify this.

I am always open to any new information - we all just want the best for our vehicles.

best regards

mqqn

Why didn't you use 5W-30?

Used M1 for years but am 67 now and hard to get under car so have been going to Valvoline OC here. Pretty good young crew and the Synthetic oil meets GM spec. Here in Florida 10w-30 works fine year round.

I thought using a different weight would do damage to the engine. This is not the case?
