I had someone try to break into my car a couple weeks ago. Dog started barking and then my alarm went off. I came running out of the house 9mm in hand and they drove off in a old VW Jetta. Luckily the only damage to the car was the window tint is a little messed up where they put the slim jim in. But I'm still pissed so I can only imagine how you are.
That's what I'm talking about. I'm not a violent person but if I came out and caught some guys fleeing after busting into my ride, I'm probably cranking off a few rounds. I'm definitely giving chase.
With the angle of the doors and those thick rubber window seals directly below lying on the horizontal control panel a huge button "Unlock" it is a very easy vehicle to unlock at quick pace.
I would guess they have use a thin peice of steel ( unwound coat hanger) through the rubber window seal and hit the unlock button. Stole what they wanted and closed the door over. I know my corvette self locks itself after a time period.
I locked myself out my car on a construction site (unaware of the self lock) it took 3 minutes to find a length of wire, and around 15secs to open the door.....

I'm very sorry to hear this. rest assured they will get theirs in the end! I noticed that the C5's alarm goes off if you hit the unlock button alone. you don't even have to open the door to set it off. I would hope that any jerkoff who would try to break into a car would run away at that point. I may need to consider an aftermarket alarm for extra protection. I have a 2 way paging alarm on my SHO and it offers great piece of mind. even if someone can break in and cut the battery leads in 5 seconds flat, the remote will keep beeping inside. I always sleep with my car keys next to me.
as to your question of whether or not the close proximity of the remote could have unlocked the car, I would be concerned! i turned off my passive feature mostly because of that. I sleep usually on the second floor of my house with the car parked outside. its probably 30-40 feet away which should be well outside of the passive remote range. even so when in bed I sometimes could hear my car horn beeping from time to time. usually when I would touch the remote or move it in any way. even at that distance the car kept unlocking and locking again. the beep from the lock is the only way I knew it was going it. that never should have happened, I'm well out of the passive range according to the manual, but it did. was the battery disconnected? the alarm should have gone off when they opened the car, even if only for a few seconds before they cut or disconnected it.

I sleep 20 feet from where my car was parked (on the street in a sub division next to a main road under a street light, we had a guest over who had taken the garage )
could the car have detected the fob while I was asleep at night
When I parked my brand new 97 in the garage I placed the keys in a closet in the kitchen. The straight line distance from the car to the keys was about 25 ft and the car kept honking the horn flashing its lights and locking and unlocking. I found with a new car and a new battery I could be up to a 100 ft from the car and it would go through that routine when the FOB was on passive. That is one reason why GM got rid of the feature.

How do the newer Vette work do they have the same issues? Needles to say I will no longer use passive mode.
I was a victim once to.. and I was ready! We had our boat hit, cars hit, neighbors hit time and time again. In a moment of exhaustion I had just cleaned up my car and in a lapse, forgot to lock it and that was my downfall, but did it pay HUGE dividends....
Thanks to 2 well hidden cameras (the idiot even looks at what he thinks might be a camera) and goes about his heist. The good thing was... the car was spotless and not a single fingerprint was on the car except the perpetrator. About a month later, they caught the guy! With my vid, still prints and a little luck, he was tossed in the pokey. Have not had a single problem in the neighborhood for nearly 3 years now.
SEE IT - makes you feel violated so bad you want to inflict a lasting dose of bodily injury!
Dude, that sucks. Where in Gilbert are you? I live in Mesa and don't have a garage and worry about my car all the time. There's nothing to steal (except for the car, of course) since I'm still rocking the stock Delco/Bose. Damn, I need a garage. And an assault rifle.
