I'm assuming the little silver can on the circuit board for the keyless entry is a crystal to generate the clock signal.
It now rattles on my remote and the remote doesn't function. Does anybody know what type of crystal that is? I'm going to try and repair the circuit board.
mine rattles also, I was under the impression that it was the motion sensor. the remote goes into power safe mode when it stays still, when you pick it up that moving thing triggers something in the circuitry so it knows to start up. this is also how the passive system works.
according to the owners manual if you leave your keys in your car with the passive feature on the remote will go into power save mode and the car will lock. if that happens, rock the car back and forth, the remote will detect the motion and come back on, the passive feature will then unlock the doors again.
I don't think that's your problem.
try to resync. when near your car hold both the lock and unlock buttons at once. it will take 8 seconds or so (seems like longer when you are holding them) and the car will beep. that re-synchronizes the remote's anti-scan sequencer to the one in the car. if that doesn't work, try the battery. if all else fails, you may be in the market for a new remote.

Motion sensor. Only used when you put the switch in the "Passive" position. Other than that it has no function.

That's because your remote does not have the passive /active feature, a switch on older remotes that automatically activates the alarm upon leaving or arrival(proximity) to your car.
Well resynchronizing the remote seemed to do the trick. Funny thing though... It seems I have the KEEP resynchronizing it. I can go in the store, come out and it will not be working again. Any ideas?

Battery? Or maybe you just need to take trip over to fleabay and get another one for around $10. That's what I did.
I think you will find that the crystal is not the source of the rattle. The motion switch for the passive function can be found on the bottom of the circuit board in the small hole there. If you remote isn't holding the access, check the battery fixture area of it. If you drop the remote, this can break easily therefore causing an intermittent loss of power to the circuits.
um.... holy guackamolie.... I was looking at 100+ per remote. My car is a 99 w/ the passive entry feature. If I could snag a new remote for 20$ I'd be all over it.

I promise you won't find a 97-99 or 2000 fob for anywhere near that. Even on Ebay, they're over $70. 2001-2004 you can find lots of places for $10. A dealer once gave me one out of his spare fobs box. He must have had a couple hundred fobs for all kinds of cars in a box. Why would they keep those things instead of letting them go with the cars?

Yea, I noticed that when I did a search. What with those 97-99 fobs? You all got them lined with gold or something?

Uh,
I would strongly advise against buying used fobs on eBay........based on my experience doing that for my 99......... most are problems looking for a new home
