Cruising down the street today with top off and I noticed that the car was slowing down... I give it gas but no response... so I look at the dash and everything it off, but stereo is still bumping along...
I threw it into neutral turned the ignition back on and she fired up...
The radio kept playing because the ignition was still on, so it still had power to it. You hit a bump and it shook the cable enough to kill the engine momentarily, maybe.
Either that or maybe your ignition switch wasn't in the run position properly. When in the run position it keeps the engine running. When in the accessory position the radio plays. Possibly hit a bump and knocked it to the accessory position? I've seen this occur on other cars.
Once the car is running the electrical comes from the alternator not the battery. Unless there is some computerized shutdown mechanism in place to check for battery connection at all times.
I'd agree with max'svette
