Just recently bought an 03 Z06 with 7500 miles on it. Great car! Just wondering about the hatch lid. If I hit the release in the car, and then close the door with windows up - it pops open. If I use my key release and don't open/close the door...it releases but doesn't pop enough to get fingers underneath. Just wondering if this is normal or the shocks need replacing?
Lube all the mechanical joints first. If that does not work then you can remove the interior lock cover and in there you can re-bend the spring that that applies tension to lift the lid. If that does not work then you can put springs over the gas shocks to aid in lift. I would not go the rout, but others have. Good luck!
Some have even installed spring loaded bumpers in place of the stock rubber bumpers.
It is a common problem. I just open and shut the door to get it to pop up. The more you use the trunk, the less likely it is to stick to the weatherstripping.
This is indeed a common problem and I too, shortly after purchasing my '02 Z, noticed this issue with disappointment. I found here on the forum a very inexpensive and creative way to fix this and I think this is what TEXHAWK0 is referring to.
Here are pictures of it. Again, I do not take credit for this... this idea came from other forum members. I apologize for the pictures as it is dark out right now...
Springs attached to the lid. I have seen some people use a single spring design. I prefer two.
Above the electronic latch mechanism, two strike plates are placed using sticky Velcro.
Total cost of this repair/mod... about $6.00. Parts can be found at a Home Depot. There is a member on the forum makes this mod in a kit and sells it for I believe $10.00. He uses a single spring design.

Reason: SP
I did all the normal lube and adjust stuff many times, but the trunk always went back to requiring the doors be closed to pop it open enough to get my finger in.
I found a product online(not a forum vendor) that adds(or actually is) a spring for the trunk lid. It works perfect, well at least the trunk always pops up about 3/4"-1" now. It is similar to Z06ster's picture but with one spring. The trunk popper also comes with a plastic base for the spring so it does not need the rivets as a base to prevent carpet damage. Of course you could buy two if you want more springiness(is that a word?). Total time for install is less than 5 minutes. It will actually take longer to get the torx driver out of your tool box and walk to the car then it will take to install the spring.
Google C5 trunk popper. It only costs $15 with shipping. Probably one of the cheapest things you'll ever buy for your car.
Keep in mind that you should still lube all mechanisms and adjust your rubber bumpers to keep it working as good as possible.
You're welcome,
Dog

Same thing on my car with a single lift strut. Never had the second strut installed. Does anyone with both struts have the same problem? Thanks.
I have both struts. Had the issue once- lubed and it has not been back. Now I live in Arnold country, so it does not get to cold when your 4 miles from the beach. I'm sure those who live in colder climates may see the problem more often.

Normally the trunks only have one strut? That is odd. Mine has both. I assume at some point someone added the other strut. I did adjust the bumpers to make it pop open more though. That seems to work pretty good for me. I guess I could lube the mechanism too. What is everyone using, white lithium?

Anything dinosaur will work best, just needs to be thin enough to work into the hinge mechanism. Try that first before hitting the latch.
