I have a Garmin Zumo 550 that I bought for my bike, but use in the car as well. I like any unit thats progammable so I can plan my own route. You just plan your route on a computer and transfer it to the unit. You can also let the unit decide on the route if you want. The Zumo is programmable and waterproof and has some other neat bike related features. The new Garmin Nuvi 750 is also programmable and its the one I would want if I was buying just for my car.
I have Garmin 350 with portable base. Unit is very easy to use. Portable base let's you easily move unit to any car you wish. (Windshield mounts are illegal in the People's Republik of Minnesota [California, too] -- that's why I went with Garmin's portable base.)
Recently used the NAV and base on a 4000-mile trip. Both worked flawlessly.
Whoa, I didn't know that! And I always use my windshield mount when I travel to California. Good thing you posted that.
I use something that I haven't seen anyone post here. It's my cell phone, which happens to be a Pocket PC. It's basically a computer that fits in your pocket, does everything a computer does and its also a cell phone. It's bluetooth ready, so there are no cables draping across the dash. They make numerous mounts for it but as you can see, I'm using the windshield mount (illegal in California ). This particular mount has never come off the windshield; you have to pry this puppy off! The phone is running some GPS software by ALK Tecnologies called Pocket CoPilot. I've used this for years and of course you can move it from car to car. The best thing about it is, you never leave it in the car because you'll feel naked without your cell phone.
Here's the bluetooth antenna, You can pretty much stick it anywhere in the car. I usually stick it here:
A very inexpensive way to go and the software is highly configurable.
I just picked up a Garmin 530 at the Cabelas in Buda,TX. for $199. last Saturday. That was the internet sale price and they honored it at the store. I really like it. Easy to use and nice display.
