During the process of applying the final coats of Zaino before putting my car away for the Winter :cry I found quite a few little nicks in the paint behind all the tires as well as lots of pock-marks on the rear brake vents. As much as I don't like the look of mud guards I'm convinced that I'll put them on in the Spring. I know there are lots of films out there that can be applied, but that won't help all the dings in the brake vents. I've been thinking about putting the Stonguard films behind the wheel openings and then mounting the guards over top of them so the mud guards wont' mark up the finish, too. Sound reasonable? Recommendations for good mud guards? Thanks.
Are you being careful where you drive (i.e. good roads with no gravel, etc.)? Mud guards, in my opnion, on a Vette look awful. If you can find a different way I would avoid mud guards.
Re: Mud guards on the Z06 - gotta do it! (EdwardETraylorIII)
The Cleartastic has a note that says they don't fit the wheel wells on a Z06. I don't like the look of mud gaurds either, but the car is getting chipped like hell! And, no, I'm not a redneck, just someone who's paying alot of money for a beautiful car and would like to keep it looking that way!!!!
Well.we just returned from Pigeon Forge,TN and prior to leaving West Virginia,I installed the Cleartastic on my 02 Z06 and every piece fit perfect......Perhaps the older versions of Cleartastic never fit the wheel wells? That I don't know, but all mine stayed on the whole trip and when I returned home, simply pulled them off, cleaned them and put them back in the box they came in for the next trip.......While true, these Cleartastic pieces probably wouldn't prevent a rock or pebble from flying back and nicking the face of the rear brake ducts, they are a LOT better than having mudguards installed.....Just my opinion and nothing else.....
The Zman
Saw some that were the molded type and came in factory colors. saw the item, but not shown on the actual car (hmmm a message here....?)
Anyway, it was either Mid America or Ecklers. If anyone has this type on their car, please post some pics. I am considering the same if they do not require any drilling to mount.
I feel your pain. Live in NE PA. and we have Lots and Lots of gravel on the side of every road. It of course, does not stay on the side of the road. I ordered the Altec splash guards. I had these molded guards on my 92 coupe and they fit fine and looked decent. The problem is on the C5 you have to drill in stead of just bolting them on. Well drilling is not a problem but when you have to drill 1/4" from the outside of each fender... That becomes a problem. There is currently NO ONE that makes a decent looking mud guard for C5's without drilling close to the outside of the fender. Im not willing to drill my $50,000 plus car yet. Hopfully someone will think these things out and come up with a bolt on unit... Good luck and have a great holiday... :seeya

The cleartastic static-cling material fits the flat and gentle curving areas of the body, but not not the lower compound curves and sharp corners that take the worst abuse from the rocks and grit. Another area to watch for chip wear is is the curving bottom corner of the rear door jamb; the front wheels throw all that road crap right into it, especially with sticky rubber mounted.
You're going to have to use the clear 3M ScotchCal adhesive film material custom installed by an experienced professional to accomplish any real protection.
i have used the mid america splash guards # 602-268 on all 3 of my C-5s. you need to drill just 1 hole in the inner fender cover. i cut the rear ones off 2 inches so they did not hang down so far. you can hardly see them on the cars because they line up with the tires.
The new "Vette" magazine I received yesterday had a sharp looking red C5 in it that had matching mud guards - looked like the Altec's. For the protection they offer it looks like a good tradeoff in appearance. I'm going to do some kind, just a matter of which ones. I just hate looking at the nicks every time I wash it!!! I have a lot of time to think about it - now that it's nearing December in the Northeast my baby is snugged away.
