Beltronics holds I believe most of the patents for radar detectors. I bought one for myself, the wife's BMW, my daughter and my son the Beltronics 995, @ under $300.00 from Circuit City. These units work excellent....Check out the Beltronics web site for more info and confirm the patent issue...
Forget the Cobra. Just trust me on that one. They won't protect you worth squat, but they'll leak so bad they'll trigger all the decent RDs on the road.
Best choices today are:
-V1 (directional arrows and "bogey counter")
-Escort 8500 X50 (great ramp-up and filtering, plus only Escort has Expert mode to display up to 8 threats by band)
-Escort 9500 (GPS feature to permanently flag known non-threats like door openers)
-Beltronics STI (THE model to have if it's illegal to use a RD where you drive, in VA, DC, and parts of Canada. Undetectable by radar detector detectors.)
All of these models have very good range. Of course, don't count on them for laser detection. If you get an alert, it generally means it's time to pull over. On the other hand, laser jammers are still legal in most areas and there are a few companies out there that do make decent ones.
