Default Rub Strip

I was just looking at the thread for the pics of the pewter C5's, and began to think I like the looks without the rub strip. Since I don't take my car anywhere where the rub strip will actually do its job, I got to wondering if it would be possible to remove it without damaging the paint.
Has anyone done it and if so do you have any suggestions as to how to proceed?

You can remove it easily but leave the center one. That one is used to flow the air up to the radiator.

It seems I wasn't I was clear with the question. By rub strip I mean the optional side body molding to help prevent door chips. I guess I was thinking of a boat I used to have.

Okay. You then mean (BSM) body side molding. Do a search here and you will find a lot of step by step. I used fishing line and a plastic bondo putty thing to pull it off. You can also use a heat guy or hair blow dryer as you do that to loosen it up. Get a bottle of Goo Gone to clean up the sticky stuff.

Yes you can easily remove these. I did with a hair dryer and fishing line. Others will tell you you can't do it with a hair dryer you need a heat gun but I did it with a hair dryer and some 20lb test monofiliment fishing line. Just go slow and don't damage the moldings (there are people on this forum that like them and will buy your old ones as long as they're not damaged). When you get them off just clean up the glue that's left with some mineral spirits.

That is probably the most common method to remove them. Another hint is that it might be useful to have a second person on hand to help keep pressure on the molding as you saw through the tape.

ok, so has anyone removed the body side molding to find the paint underneath is a shade off from not being exposed to the sun for 10 years?
I'm thinking of removing it but would hate to notice a discolor after I do.

This is a problem on the hood and trunk emblems, but I have not heard of problems with bsm's. I can see where there would be a concern though with these cars getting up there in age.
