so I don't think it will work in the '97- '98, but the '99 ECM will, and yes, you need to change the pinout in the connector for the ECM.
checkout the scan & Tune section, and also look on the EFILive and HP Tuners forums.

ok it looks like I was wrong about the '02 ECM....LOL

from what I have read, the '02 ECM has way different software in it, I could be wrong about that, it's been a while.

Your gonna have to spend 100$ or so on a ECM,
then your either gonna have to re-pin it and have the tuning done, this is gonna cost money.
We charge 500$ to re-pin and do a N/A tune with everything adjusted to work in your 97-98 car, and were one of the only shops that i know of that consistently does these swaps, so its very easy for us so we can charge less then a shop that may be near you and has never done it before.
Let me re-iterate, this is not for the feint of heart, it is not that difficult, but your gonna have to be EXTREMELY patient and your gonna need a tuner with EFI Live who really knows what he is doing. If anyone wants specefic info on how we do this just ask away, it can most defenetily be done, but you dont want to go into this looking for the "cheap and easy way"
