Thus far I've replaced every bulb on my car with LEDs except the headlights/foglights (HID of course) and the panel lights: controls/buttons etc.
Question: I have a 97 coupe and want LEDs in the following places:
- Door controls on passenger and driver's side
- DIC buttons and dimmer control light
- Climate control
I will also be doing the A4 Gear indicator, Traction control and Selective ride control (not that it works, but i want it to look like it does) However I believe these require creative solutions.
How many bulbs will I need?
I currently have blue LED "crusing lights" behind the door pulls, under the seats, and in the speaker coves. I'm trying to decide if I want to continue the Blue theme or contrast by having white LEDs.
I say go for it. I just bought all the LEDs to do the interior. We are going to do the install this weekend. For the 2000 and older models with the auto climate control it takes about 40 lights to do the switches, radio, a/c, and instrument switches. I'll let you know on Sunday how it went. If you are going to do it its a good time to add the gauge bezels.
Let there be light! I just wish I could hook it up like you.... You got pics of your achievements? Lets see pics and then maybe we can all chime in about the contrast you are thinking of! WE KNOW your blue must look good, BUT maybe if you contrast with the white/black light maybe... Maybe it would create a nice glow and contrast all around like you mentioned!
I look forward to seeing your pics if you have any and then begging you to do mine

I would be interested in A4 gear selector lighting solutions. I have attempted to light the red indicator only. Don't know how long it will last but it's ok for the time being. I need to paint the side of the bulb so light only emits out the top.
Bell has an awesome write-up for your A4 indicator, Also there are plug and play LED bulbs for every switch except the HUD/Dimmer. Neowedge from Autolumination. http://autolumination.com/74.htm (scroll down)
Stock bulbs and Neowedges. I just noticed that he has different sizes now! Cool maybe the smaller one will fit the HUD/Dimmer switch pack!!!!;
I went red and replaced the silicone bulb covers with red ones on all switches, Radio and HVAC. Note how small the HUD/Dimmer bulb (on the left) is compared to the rest of the bulbs (on the right)
Another tricky area is the Traction/Active Handeling button, it's dim stock and LEDs make it worse. We embedded an LED right inside the button (the button next to the T/AH is my new fuel door release switch)
Hang Pilot: Was the original bulb in the indicator a 194?
You dont' have to "paint" the sides per se. If you take some fine sand paper to it, a black sharpie will work just as well.
Okay, so neowedge bulbs are the way to go. (oznium has autolumination beat on the price)
From what i've read i will need:
4 on drivers door, 2 on passenger door
1 on trunk release
4 on left instrument cluster switches (very ground down)
3 on right instrument cluster buttons
1 5mm LED for traction control
3 5mm LEDs for the shift indicator
How many and of what type will I need for the Climate control?
Those smaller neos that autolumination has may fit the HUD/Dimmer switches, I know that we had Chris (the owner) talked into having some made so maybe he did???? I'd pop him an EMail to find out....
I think you're one shy, but I can't remember!!!! Send me your EMail and I can send you all the info I've gathered on this including the pin outs to test everything before you put it back in the car.
