I first had HUD in a 1992 Bonneville. When I started looking for a C5, it was one of my "Must Have's". The downside of HUD is it is difficult to read with polarized sunglasses, although the Vet is much better than the Bonneville in this regard.
You just have to force yourself to use it to make it come natural. Now that I am driving my winter car, I miss it and have to force myself to look at the dash.
QFT.
My sunglasses are polarized (a MUST in Vegas) and all they do is diminish the brightness of the HUD. It's not an issue unless the sun is right in my face, then I can't really see it.
When I started looking for a C5 and learned of this option, I said, Who needs it?? I thought this is only for someone who drives SO FAST that it would be too dangerous to take one's eyes off the road. That would never apply to me.
Then I drove one that had HUD. The first thing I knew was that HUD jumped from the bottom to near the top of my must have list. As one with a new (for me) Vette, I'm frequently monitoring my speed with the HUD till I get used to judging the speed by "feel."
Gages? What Gages??
On top of that, I like my steering wheel tilted all the way down, which, guess what, obstructs my view of the top of the speedometer, right in the critical path of reading my current speed.
I didn't think I wanted one either until I got the wife a 00 Vert with a HUD in it.....I am now suffering from a bad case of HUD envy...
Anyone know of a shop/person in the mid-atlantic area offering retrofit of the HUD into a 97? (I am in south central PA, but willing to drive a little). I know there is a forum vendor doing this down in SC, but that is just too far away. I really don't have either the time or talent to install myself, so that is not an option.
Love my HUD. Find that I use it nearly exclusively. I do like the design and look of the gauges, especially at night, but find myself using the HUD most of the time.

The HUD is nice. I guess I was fortunate enough to have
that option already on the car when I bought it. If it
didn't have it on there I could live without it.
When I first got my Z06 I found myself looking down at the dash often only because of habit. Everytime I looked down I thought why am I looking here.
I love the HUD. Actually, I think it's a nice safety feature. It keeps my eyes out the windshield where they should be. It's just a shame to have such a beautiful gauge cluster and never look at it.
It seems to me that having your eye's on the road instead of inside the cockpit, gives you 'see and avoid' abilities not afforded with non-HUD vehicles (be it plane or car).
