Default Cam Install Extras?

K searched for a bit and couldn't find the info I needed....so I got a 1997 c5 a4 ls1 with LT headers, CAI, and lately just bought a tr224 on a 114 lsa. Do I need any other parts for this install? rods? rockers? anything? let me know as much as you can.

while there i would change the push rods, oil pump, timing chain and springs and retainers....at a minimum. you could go on to add a new water pump, t-stat, rockers, lifters, UD pulley. just depends on how much you want to spend. Then add a tune. Heck while your at it, might as well do the heads, a 90/90 setup to avoid a retune and further R&R of engine parts at a later date.

Couldn't have been said better. The modding just never ends!

Things you will need:

http://www.texas-speed.com/shop/item...d=172&catid=54

http://www.texas-speed.com/shop/item...d=620&catid=53

http://www.texas-speed.com/shop/item...d=151&catid=55

This is where I got my stuff from but there are many vendors that you can buy these things from or just look in the parts for sale section and I'm sure you can find most of what is needed for your install. You will also need to have it tuned as I'm sure you already know.

good luck!

Will do

Ok so I got an LS2 timing chain lined up, as well as an LS6 Oil pump, but confused on the 1st thing. If I was to look for 1 used, what would I describe it as? I want to do this project on a budget.

Install will be done over the winter sometime. No stall yet but have considered. Motor has 50k on it, do I need new rockers, lifters, and rods?

you need pushrods and springs. I understand the budget but why sacrifice your engine and doing this all over again to save a few dollars? that seems trivial at best. I would also use new parts.

well, it was mentioned earlier that you dont NEED new rockers, rods, and lifters, its just another step in adding a level of durability to the motor. The springs/retainers, chain, oil pump is what is recommended at a minimum to support this cam swap. However, looking at that texas speed link above, that kit does include pushrods with the springs/retainers.

I think a cam swap on a stock motor is sometimes thought to be all you have to do is swap the cam, when really there are several things in addition to the cam that you need to swap in order to support the different cam properly. Doing the job right costs a little more, but will give peace of mind in the long run.

Yes, as I was one who thought it was just the cam that was switched I was unaware of the extras. I think im going to do the oil pump and the ls1 timing chain but im still on the fence on whether I need new rods and springs and rockers..

When I did my cam swap a couple years ago I didnt put a new oil pump on, then this past week I added some AFR heads and I still have the stock pump. The oil pressure holds great.......

Oil pump improved in 01.
You didn't need one, neither did I...but I would suggest a new one for a 97, and since you have to remove the pump for the chain swap, there isn't a better time to do it

Hello- you need to do the Rods and Springs for sure. You are chaning the cam profile from your stock cam..so you will need stronger Rods for 1 thing, second the length of the rods you have to use will(or most likley) be different with a different cam. I would talk to a speedshop or supporting vendor on here for some guidance on this stuff...or at least post this thread over in the C5 Tech section
The springs you need to change, it is good insurance and a must IMO if you are going with a larger cam. Stock rockers are pretty stout so those you dont need to change.

Good luck

Hey Large
If you add up all your parts costs and it gets near 1000.- 1400. or so you might want to put the cam install on hold and just do a set of 342's to start.
Just saw one on FleaBay go for 500.+ship.
You will be amazed. Also no matter what mods you do sooner or later you will change those gears out.
Seems a shame to do a cam if you can't do it with ALL the "goodies" upfront. IMO

Good luck no matter what you do.
