Default Steering Wheel question

Today, I sat in my car and turned on the car. After about 2 minutes of letting it warm up, I began to reverse. As I was reversing and I turned the wheel, I felt a let "click" like pressure. I turned the stereo off and moved the steering wheel from left to right and I heard a very tiny "click" Is that because something is rubbing up against the back? I put my hand to check, but nothing was rubbing in the back area. Could it be something on the inside?

This "click" feeling is the first i've noticed. It doesnt seem to be too much of an issue, because when im driving and moving the steering wheel left and right, I dont notice it. But when I'm in a stop position, and move the wheel left to right, I hear/feel the "click" Any input guys of what it can be?

That is a new one to me. I am sure someone a lot smarter than me will chime in with an answer.

I hope so. Any idea is helpful. Its not something extremely noticeable, but I know its new haha. By the way, off topic here...your name "Stormrider" are you a Iced Earth fan?

I'm just offering a wild guess here, but have you put the column lock bypass in your car yet? That sound might be the column trying to lock up on you. When my dreaded column lock happened, it happened exactly in the scenario you described. I let mine warm up, then was backing up slowly, turned the wheel and 'bam' it was locked up big time! So I could easily be wrong here, but you might be flirting with a column locking up on you. Just guessing.

That would be my guess too.
There is a pin that fits into slots in a lockplate on the back side of the wheel, and it could be very close to hanging up.
Never mind, I just looked at your profile and it looks like you have a 2004 automatic, so the column should not lock. Is that the car you have a problem with?

Yes. I have a 04 Auto coupe.

I heard that 04 models do not have column lock issues....is that not true?

That is true your in the clear as it was never installed.

Can you be a little clearer about the noise and this 'back' and 'inside' what are you referring to?

If you go to Corvette's of Houston and download the PDF to install the column lock there is an excellent illustrated steps to remove and install the pad and trim and you could then get a look underneath the steering area.

Excuse me for not knowing all the names of the vehicle parts. I will do my best to describe it. In fact I have a link that might help with the area im talking about.

http://www.nuclearbunny.org/~chadwic...nterior041.jpg

The area where the steering wheel attaches to, is also attached to the front of the display correct? I feel that the "click" sound comes between the front of the display and the back of the steering wheel unit. Am I making sense or am I still confusing everyone? lol

No need to be sensitive just trying to get a better idea of the area you are referring to.

Might want to open the panel up as I mentioned and take a look around especially if you can duplicate by moving the steering wheel.

Check out those instructions, they should help safety remove it.

Other than that sorry no clues at the moment.

No worries, what's important is we find out what is causing the noise... Hopefully it's just something rubbing and it is more of an annoyance then anything.

I think thats what it is. It certainly feels like when Im turning from left to right that sometime its "nudging" or trying to prevent it from smoothly turning. Its not a heavy force either. Like, I dont have to put extra effort into trying to get over that "nudge" I leave work in 30 minutes. I will see if the sound is still active when turning and post my experience

Like I said, its not a major thing. Hopefully, it doesnt turn into a major issue either lol

Mine's an '01 MN6 and I get what sounds like some rubbing sounds from the steering column area when maneuvering really slow through a parking lot with lots of turning to one side then the other. I also hear a notice in the rear area that's like maybe a clicking sound too while doing that. When I had my oil changed recently by the Vette shop who is one of the few I let work on it when I can't, check it out. Then came back and said hop in lets go for a ride. While driving in circles in the parking lot you could hear the sound... and was asked if that was it. Yep. I was informed it is the posi-traction gears loading up in slow tight turns. We hopped in a C6 auto to demo it to me, wow was it even worst. I was told Chevy recommends changing the fluid in the rear and it might quite it down some. I'm not so worried about it now that I understand what it is, but it goes along the lines of the inherit driveline noise. Seems Chevy eng's could have figured this out to eliminate those noises.

Thats very interesting. Well. as I stated, I would inform you all on the current condition of the "clicking" noise in my steering wheel. I believe its just the rubber ends that are rubbing when turning. That "click" that I hear is the rubbers pressure point. So its no big deal All is good in the land of c5ness! THank you all for the assistance.
