It freaking cold here in Wyoming. I was running some errands today and got caught in the snow. Let me tell you that was a white knuckle ride. I came to a complete stop only once on the way home and it spun with me letting the clutch out VERY SLOWLY. The others times I just slow rolled till the lights turned green.
My car is a DD but I drive my wife AWD car when the roads are snowed over. Is there anything thing bad about driving the car when it is 13 degree outside. I do give her at least 20 minutes of warm up time to ensure oil is flowing and fluids heat up. I have been in the car once when the clutch wouldn't allow me to change gears so the long warm up is needed.
I feel horrible but the garage isn't cleaned out enough for the Vette. So it is getting the blunt of the snow and cold. Once it warms up enough to be outside for period of time it will be clean. My wife's stuff will see the dumpster soon.

Ouch. That is cold. I got out and washed last weeks rain and road grime off mine this morning. I am guessing it was around 45 degrees or so. Not too bad. I dread those days when it gets really cold like you are having. If it snows here, I am guessing it will be a day home from work for me. It is not worth the deductible to go to work in that kind of weather.

I was able to sneak out yesterday morning for my weekly cruise, it was 29 degrees. Buy the time I get home from work I'm pooped and it's already dark so the weekend is the only time I can enjoy my Vette. We got about 1 inch of snow and freezing rain after that so the car is tucked away safely in the garage. Now I have to chip out my DD Ranger who has been displaced to the driveway. So far this fall has been pretty mild, I was even thinking about a coat of Zaino today!
It is not really good for a car to warm it up by just letting it idle.
I would wait a minute or so, then drive at moderate speeds until the car is up to temperature.
We got about 4 inches of the white stuff here in the Twin Cities yesterday. My Z06 is tucked up in the garage under a cover waiting for spring. I am lucky enough to have a 4x4 company car so no thoughts of driving the Vette in the snow here.
All of you from warmer climes who can drive (and therefore post something interesting) during the winter will keep me going 'til May.

82 degrees and sunny here today, but a CCCOOOLLDD front is headed our way! I think it's supposed to drop to 50 tomorrow night. I may just have to hook up the block heater! Man.. winter sucks!
I feel your pain. Out here in the Big sky country the winters are long. I get cabin fever and resort to popping in on this forum and contributing with annoying wisecracks

It is not healthy for piston rings and letting the car idle does not warm it up at all really, hence taking 20 minutes sitting there.
I would not let it idle past 2-3 minutes.
Yes 1-2 minutes for me even on the coldest of mornings, then I drive but dont drive it hard until it is fully warmed up. Just letting a car idle to warm up is something I've never understood. And the waste in gas is just sad. Zero mpg sucks! The car will warm itself up properly if it's driven, but not driven hard (keep shifts around or below 2K rpm at first). But as for the cold being bad for the car... not really. I'd just keep the salt and grime off the paint and let the engine come up to temp before you go crazy with it. But I'm guessing if the roads are slick anyway, you won't be getting too crazy.
I brought my Z06 home two weeks ago and have not driven it since. One of the reasons is that we are in such a bad drought here in the Atlanta area. You are not allowed to wash your car or utilize any outside water. People have been driving around trying to catch you so they can report you and get half the fine-$500. Consequently, it is staying under the cover in the closed garage. If this keeps up I may think about moving to Wyoming. The summers are shorter, but I could wash it when I got home.

Don't know if this sounds silly, but what if you take a large bucket of water from the inside and wash the car, does that count, technically its not outside water
