Default Electrical Issues-Thoughts and Advice Needed

Hi Everyone,

So I'm out cruising in the Z last night and a guy pulls up beside me to tell me my rear lights including the brake lights aren't working. What's weird is that they were working just fine when I left the house 45 minutes earlier. BTW, the drive was 100% normal, and I didn't do anything that I am aware of to cause this.

So I quick head home and sure enough, all of the rear lights including the lights on the rear quarter panels and even the reverse lights aren't working. Then things got weirder. I shut her down for the night and when I hit the lock button on my keyless entry the alarm goes off. I hit unlock and the alarm stopped going off thankfully. When I locked her manually, the dash lights and the radio lights illuminated!

For what it's worth, the headlights, HUD, radio, dash, power windows, etc...all work just fine. As for the engine, it isn't skipping a beat.

My Z is a garage queen with 11,700 miles. Never raced, tracked, just babied. Any idea what the heck is going on? Any and all input is appreciated.

Thanks,
Bill

check battery condition, is it leaking on the PCM? Check battery tray for any acid spill...

body control module perhaps?

there is an entire thread, a great thread by the way, regarding electrical issues over there in C5 tech.

being a new Z owner myself it is my opinion to start at the battery, especially after all the reading I have been doing .

The day after I brought my Z home, I keyed the car and everything went nuts , gauges, lights, messages were flying..

I can't say for certain but it appears to have been one of two things, maybe both.
I used Key #2 and it may have been dirty and I also pulled it out of the ignition before the car actually shut off. When I restarted the car is when everything went nuts...

I cleaned the key, waited about 30 seconds and everything was fine and no problems have occurred since then.

When real strange things happen you need to start thinking real basic instead of specific, as all of the errors that were mentioned above make no sense, but they are all battery related.

read thru the c5 tech thread on electrical issues, it's a great education.
