I too am in college. Money is hard to come by sometimes but I make it work. I spend more money on my car than anything else. I do occasionally go out but not very much anymore. I dont drink every weekend or go gambling. I like to mod the hell out of my car, what else can I say. 
To answer the question though.....Nitrous is the easiest, most cost efficient mod for the power you get out of it, but dont expect it be really safe without spending at least $1k. And even then its not fool proof. Heres a pic to help you decide haha

Here's what you need to do. Find an empty parking lot and mark off a finish line. Put both rides in neutral with the engines off. At the count of three, start pushing. First one to the finish line wins. It's legal, doesn't waste gas, is no where as dangerous as actually racing, and if some cops pass by they'll probably get a chuckle. Of course, the lighter car wins unless you're a wimp.
Sounds stupid I know. But then, trying to out-mod your friends is kinda stupid too, especially if the winner isn't going to get any endorsements that will pay their way through college. Save your money kid. You'll thank me when you're old enough to understand. It's better to be thought of as slow than to go WOT and remove all doubt.

Find the hottest girl you can and ask her which car she prefers...that should re-allign your perspective when she picks your vette. If there's 2 guys and one wins all the races and the other get all the chicks...which one would you rather be. 'nuff said.

Take a 100 mile trip in the SX-whatever and you"ll be glad YOU have the C5.
Do not let a race to the end of a quarter-mile decide which car you want to own.
If you must .. BUY a WRX or VR4 whatever and you WILL be be having some serious second thoughts in 30 days.
I am 60 and have freaked on cars since I was 14.
IMO the VW bug and C5 Vette are the best cars for their time.

If I were you...I would not sweat it. You already beat everyone else..now show some class and just chill and enjoy your car. BTW, do you have a 6 speed or A4? If you have a 6 speed you can still take him if you know how to shift. If you have an A4, I would upgrade the rearend to at least a 342 or 390, then you'll need a stall. Not cheap any of this.Leave it alone for now save your money and finish school,,,then mod it!

I myself wouldn't care much if a heavily modded, turboed, rice rocket was faster than my bone stock Vette. He even with all the cake spent on his Mitsumushy doesn't have a "Corvette". Be patient, when you're as old as some of us peer pressure falls to zero. Be proud to own what you do at your age.

Lots of sage advice young man. Except for a cat-back, a Z06 air box and some appearance mods, I am as stock as you are. I don't race anyone, especially on the street (illegal and quite dangerous, BTW) and N02 will eat your LS1 for lunch if you go cheap. You are in college so you have more important things to spend money on. Maintaining a stock Vette is expensive enough, maintaining a modded Vette is more than a college guy should spend. As has been said, there is ALWAYS someone out there faster than you. You can already smoke 95% of whatever you come across without spending a dime, so stay stock, stay in school and use the chick magnet to your advantage
