Default Help...On Blown Engine Repair !

I came down hard when crossing railroad tracks on Thanksgiving eve. I ended up busting a hole in the oil pan. In turn within a block of the impact my engine froze up ! Little did I know that I had damaged the oil pan and lost all my engine oil.

I turned the collision into my insurance company and they are covering the engine to the tune of $ 8,000.00 in repairs. The insurance documents and the appraiser indicated "REPLACE ENGINE" .

Last evening the repair shop calls me and asks me if I'd like the timing belt replaced to the tune of customer pay, of $400.00 ? I told them NO....its supposed to be an engine REPLACEMENT !

My next call was to the insurance adjuster (after hours) and I'm awaiting the adjuster's return call. In the meantime I'm seething with annoyance from the repair shop asking me if I'd like to PAY them to replace the timing belt !

Why would an insurance job of replacing the engine use the existing timing belt ? It doesn't sound like the repair shop is REPLACING the engine. Rather they are REBUILDING IT !

Why would the insurance company issue a "replace engine" order and the repair shop call me to ask if I'd like them to replace the timing belt to the tune of 400 bucks ? Something sounds a bit deceptive here.

Am I wrong ?

DG

first off... just a heads up... we dont have timing belts. we have a timing chain, and in most cases will never need to be changed unless your in there doing a cam swap!

$8000 for replacement??!?! do you realize what you can get for $8000?? you can have them replace it with a stroker motor for half the price. do some research. sounds like they are trying to stiff you. shops going to get big $$ and try to do the least amount of work and spend the least amount possible, which means more profit for them.

tell the mechanic that the belt was replaced at the same time as the muffler bearing and that the mechanic used a left handed screwdriver for the repair.

But a new engine at the dealer installed is $8030.05 don't ask how I know.

That was a GMPP discount.

When they are paying the bill you have no choice. I could have had a hell of a motor for what they paid. But no 5 year 100k mile warranty.

That shop needs to be looked into and in the mean time you need to have your Vette removed immediately

Tell them to stop everything now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Then go down there as soon as possible and see what they have done.

Who picked this shop? If it was the insurance company give them hell.

If they say $8,000 for a new engine take the money now and find another shop. I've taken a check from the insurance company many times and did my own work.

Keep us posted!

Something really stinks here!

I just did a quick search and found a COMPLETE LS1 engine, missing only the ECM and wire harness (which you don't need), for $4900.00.

Here is the pic shown with the price -- looks like everything is there. HP rating stated at 350, torque at 365.

It sounds like the shop is not replacing the engine, but replacing PARTS of the engine. Why else would the timing belt (chain) question arise??

Your insurance company has allotted $8,000 for your repair -- make sure you get your money's worth!

Run!!

I have to agree, take it to another shop. A tow bill will be less than the problems you will have with this guy.

Post in the regional section for sugestions on a good repair shop, I would assume that in PA there are quite a few good shops.
