I've been window shopping for performance exhaust on websites here and there and I have noticed that alot of the offerings come in 2.5inches... 2.5 INCHES!?! Seriously, isn't that the stock size? I figure with a better routing that may provide some minimal gain, but isn't the point of a performance exhaust to release more back pressure? So obviously that would come from a larger size pipe. So what brand should I look towards for actual benefits? Also I am looking for twin tip exhaust, not the four tip.
Reducing backpressure is accomplished by decreasing the resistance AT the maximum volume flow of the flowing gas. As long as the pipe size is already sufficiently large enough to minimum restriction at the volume flow at WOT, then using a bigger pipe just adds weight, but doesn't necessarily reduce the resistance. The majority of the resistance we all would like to get rid of occurs in the muffler itself. That's why all the systems that claim the highest horsepower gains have very small (or no) mufflers.
However, having said this, I just saw a post on here yesterday or the day before where one the supporting vendors is now offering a full length 3" diameter system from header to tip (LG, I think - someone correct me if I'm mistaken); beautiful SS pieces too.

I think all performance exhaust are mandrel bent keeping smooth full diameter bends. Most factory are jig bent with wrinkled and restricted bends. Also stock vet pipes look pretty good till they get to the mufflers where the pipe size gets pretty small inside, thats where aftermarket is a major improvement.
