I changed the whole shifter assembly. It cost less then $200 and took less then 1 hour to do. I got it from Gene Culley (forum Vendor). He usually has a group purchase/special going on.
I used the original boot, but cut it down a little bit. The shifter **** fits the palm of my hand perfectly. I am not a racer so, as far as performance is concerned, there are probably better shifters available. For my money and driving stlye, it is perfect.
Here is my C6Z06.. I love it.. and the price is nice too (thanks again to Gene Culley)!
As for the boot.. I cut it down a little.. and put a thick rubber band on my shifter (wrapping it over many times so it is tight but still able to pull each loop out a little to move it).. then put the boot on.. put on shift ****.. then turn the boot inside out over the shifter and slide the rubber band up over it. This is a little tricky since you dont wanna break the rubber band but you want it tight enough to hold the boot.
My big problem with the factory shifter was it's altitude... Just too tall. So, since the thing has like 3" of threads, I took a hack saw and cut off the top 1 1/2" or 2", and found a shift **** that sits down on the shaft more. I love it. And other than the ****, which I had anyway, it was free!!
Sorry for the poor pic, it was taken for the radio bezel (not finished) and not for the shifter, but you can still see how much shorter it is.

Here's my BPP short-throw shifter, uncovered. It's handle assembly is 16-way adjustable for the perfect fit, no matter how long/short your arms are and how wide/narrow your shoulders. It joins the Hurst, Ripper, and a couple of others as having the shortest throws out there.
However, to some, the short lever arm make shifting into and out of gears a bit tough - no problem - just add two .05 thick copper washers to the shifter detent that resides in the tranny case and viola, you have super-short throws AND ease of shifting - the best of both worlds!
Anyway, here're some pics of the shifter and ***** that I've used:
NOthing too radical here... I cut down my stock shifter and added the large black shifter **** with the white shift pattern. It works great, looks good and didn't cost very much.
Dave68: That first photo is very "Terminator-esque"!
Here is my Hurst. I didn't like it at first but after putting on about 1000 miles I got quite used to it and like it very much now.
The Hurst is very similar in feel to my BPP and I rowed the BPP for quite a while before reading of the anti-venom mod. Curious as to how different a couple of washers could make a shifter feel, I decided to try it out when the car was in the air for its annual oil change. Side-to-side shifting is unchanged, but dang, the 1-2, 2-3 and 3-4 shifts are much easier now, not quite as easy as the C6 Z06 shifter throws, but appreciably shorter. This is why I stayed with the BPP.
Hurst Shifter with kirban ****... nice feel, this one is chrome, but they have black and white also. i like the white with black shift pattern... omg the dust in the picture makes me sick! its been cleaned! i need to take another picture...
