Default Question on tuning

Kind of bored tonight and came up with a stupid question. Let say you got your car tuned by a tuner. What can erase the tune beside a retune by another tuner? I have heard that the dealer can erase yyour tune when they do work.

The dealer uses similar software, so yes they can erase your tune when they reload the stock map (which they could do to troubleshoot issues). I believe the PCM must be left unlocked by the tuner for them to do this though.

The dealer shouldn't be messing with your PCM though. A step in the column lock TSB had them flashing something to it before though... that would erase any tune you had on there. I'd just tell the dealer not to touch my PCM. If you had a custom tune, and there was something wrong with the car, I would take it back to the tuner who loaded the map... not the dealer.

Would removing the battery or fooling around with electronics mess it up? Looking at replacing the battery with an optima and installing a new sound system.

I'm sure a tuner will jump in tomorrow and give you the exact technical answers. But no, the battery should not have any effect on the tuning map. Think of it like how unplugging your computer does not erase your hard drive. Your map is stored in the PCM.

No, the battery will not erase the tune. Yes, a dealer can go in and reflash (assuming it is not locked by the tuner) the PCM but I can't imagine this happening unless they change the PCM. Just make sure to tell them not to do such a thing. With that said, even if it did occur, any reputable tuner should have your tune saved. I always save the customers stock tune and modified tune in case it is ever needed. And should it be needed again, I would not charge to put it back in the car and I would never lock a tune.
