after spending a few afternoons installing a
b&b exhaust and a k and n intake, i started the car to take it for a test drive, and lowered my windows to hear the engine and exhaust better and my passenger side window is making a horrible rubbing and scratching noise when it travels at the top and at the bottom of the window track. pls help. thanks and have a great week.
Coincidentally, same problem here, although I was not installing anything... I bought the car used about 4 months ago, everything working fine, one day the passenger window makes this same noise. I think there is a rock or some debris lodged in the window from driving with the top off, try it up and down a few times, makes a horrible noise but don't see any scratching etc., decide to leave it alone and have someone take the door/window apart someday to see what's wrong. A few days later I try the window again, just for kicks, and it works just fine.
I don't use it much, but it was working fine up until a week or so ago, and now the noise is back.
What is the noise? Motor, gears, etc. rubbing? The window is still functional, but don't want to keep rolling the window up or down as needed if it would further damage something, or the window could get stuck in the down position...
I was having a lot of problems with my passenger window being stuck. I did the fonzie method for years. Finally, mine started to make the same noise as you are describing when it was going down. I searched on this forum and some suggested that it was time for a new window regulator motor. I gave in and had it replaced. Luckily my friend is a mechanic and he got me a discount from a local dealership and he installed it for me. Also, Gene at GMPartsHouse has good prices on these. Good luck!
So it sounds like it could be the motor or gears that are grinding somehow, and slamming the door or bumping the window may make it go away for a while... My main concern is that it sure sounds like something is scratching the window and didn't want to damage anything - as long as I can still roll the window up and down the "fonzie" method may work for a while at least... aaayyyyy
It was embarrasing when people in other cars were trying to talk to me and I couldn't roll the damn window down But once the grinding noises began, it was the last straw for me. Pretty soon, the motor will have to be replaced....

Pretty soon, Reed! How can you sleep! Let's get in that garage and rip that door apart pronto!
I have the very same issue on both sides. I was warned the windows would stop working but that has not been the case. On the single occasion when they did a simple slam of the door, unjammed them and they continued service as normal.
During its service at the stealership they warned that the window mechanism on the vette is a big bag of cack and that you need to replace the full unit.... However after they opened it up it turned out to be just a "cog" that had popped out and when pushed back in the sound stopped.
Looking through my cars history logs the full window mechanism was replaced before, so I am inclined to agree with the stealerships "design flaw" analysis. I just refuse to stump up the big bucks for it to happen again and again so very happy with the temporary repair.
