has anybody else had trouble getting into reverse gear? seems like mine is pretty finnicky (sp?).....takes a few throws to get it to go, sometimes pops out of gear after engaging, sometimes have to ease it into gear while slowly easing the clutch out....
i've heard changing the tranny fluid to synthetic helps the shifting alot...
I have never had it pop out of gear but they dont make it easy for you to get into reverse.
If you are rolling back at all (over 5 mph) it locks reverse so that you cant just shove it in there. I find that when I have trouble shifting into reverse, releasing and engaging the clutch helps or I will put it in 1st gear, roll forward just a little bit, come to a complete stop and then go to reverse. Using that method I seldom have any issues.
What I do is whenever I am going into reverse, i'll put the shifter in R, then I'll keep pushing on it while I let the clutch out, and often times, I'll feel the shifter go that one extra click to fully engage. Then I'll take my hand off it. It doesn't bother me except for when I forget to do that and it grinds.
I will suggest that you do the shifter alignment procedure which is a simple thing to do. If still having problems past that, then tranny troubles are coming in your future.
Yup me too. Seems like reverse is a problem on ALOT of these cars. I've been told that it is NOT an indicator of serious tranny problems. Anyway, starting it in reverse like the gentleman above said is one solution. I always start it shift it into first with the clutch in. Then i let the clutch out just far enough to roll forward a fraction of an inch. After that it slides smoothly into reverse without fail.. I got that tip off this forum and have used it ever since. If thats the worst problem we have with our cars then i can live with it.
While not a "fix," this works: If the lever balks at going into reverse, shift into second, then into reverse. This makes the bits in the tranny align to permit reverse to engage.
Don't have those issues you mentioned. However, if your trying to put it into reverse with the key in the ACC or removed, good luck. There is a lock out solenoid, turn the key to ON and it will go right into R.
Suppose to put it in R when you shut it down and park the vette. (e-brake on of course)

You should be able to slide into the gears with little resistance. When you start up shift through a few gears (3rd to 4th is easy because its up and down from neutral). It should go right into R.

I mentioned the shifter alignment then possible tranny issues for a good reason. On my '99, I had changed the fluid to the new Mobil1 synthetic trans fluid on a whim. A few weeks later, it started jumping out of reverse and became progressively worse. Finally, I took it in only to find that my BorgWarner(that it wasn't supposed to have from the factory) had some kind of cardboard bushings inside and they specifically don't like synthetic fluid. Anyway, I screwed myself over real bad in this case and ended up buying a new Tremec transmission and the cost was no fun. '97's and '98's, obviously a few '99's, don't use synthetic fluid unless you got lots of money to throw away.

I have a problem with my first gear sometimes also. Occasionally I have to use all my strength to put it into first. It feels like the gears aren't lined up and i have to line up the teeth myself.
If I start the car in neutral...which is every time, I usually slip it into second or fourth and then it'll go into reverse easily. And this is common on my truck too and other cars I've owned. It helps the gears synchronize....same effect as double clutching while driving.
Now if you are experiencing grinding and other problems....you probably have "other problems" such as your clutch not fully disengaging because you have a hydraulic problem with your master/slave cylinder or low/bad fluid, or the pressure plate springs going bad...or ...or ...
But I'm no expert......just stuff I think I know and spout out like it's real.
