Default Air Conditioning Compressor Switch

I'm pretty sure this is going to be operator error but here goes. I turned on the heat the other day - vert with the top down - have never used it before. I noticed that the compressor light came on too. I pushed the button to turn the compressor off but it just blinks and then goes back to solid on. Can't I turn the heater on without the compressor?

If you shut down in defrost mode it will fire back up in that mode

When it senses moisture it uses the AC to defrost the car

From the manual:

The air conditioning does not operate
at temperatures below approximately 35F to 40F
(2C to 4C). The light on the A/C button will flash if
pressed when air conditioning is not available. The air
conditioning cools and dehumidifies the air coming into
the vehicle. The air conditioning cannot be turned off in
defrost and defog,
as it helps to remove moisture from
the vehicle. It also helps to keep the windows clear.
If the system is operating in the AUTO mode, turning
the air conditioning off will delete AUTO from the
digital display and show current mode and fan settings.
The AUTO button must be pressed
