Well, I had my water pump and a some of the pulleys and belts replaced a couple of weeks ago. Now my car has the following symptoms:
o when I start the car, it sounds like my belt is squeaking near the alternator
o when I am driving, I can continue to hear the squeaking when I step on the gas. When I step on the clutch or when the car is in neutral, I can't hear the noise (as much).
o someone mentioned to rub a bar of soap on the inside of the belts. That temporarily solves the problem. But eventually the squeaking returns.
I am going to take it back to my wife's uncle (mechanic) to check it out. Any info I should let him know? Thanks!
I once had a pesky belt noise on a Rock Crawler JEEP CJ7. The opposite of a Vette for sure, the problem was like yours. At times the belt would slip so bad that I was too embarassed to drive it. Changed belts and aligned the belt path over all the accessory drive. The problem would disappear for a while then SCREEEEECH! The problem turned out to be a slow leak, (seep), of coolant from a loose hose clamp above the waterpump. Never a drip on the floor, just on the belt. I used a bright light and an inspection mirror, the only clue was a small stain on the waterpump.
The clamp just got loose. I spent hours and $$$ beyond belief before I found that one lose clamp. Two turns on the worm drive, new belt, and no more noise ever again.
Good luck.
I have a similar situation with squeaky belts But mine has a small antifreeze leak with it. Can't for the life of me find out where its coming from. My car is a 98 with about 86K miles on it. It maybe about time to replace the water pump but I want to be sure thats where its coming from. Its a very small leak that is not always present. I can go days without a drop on the ground and then one day I may have a puddle the size of a silver dollar. This weekend I plan on looking into it further. Another thing I notice is a small amount of antifreeze around the edge of the purge tank. But that is not the side where the spot on the floor usually shows up. The spot usually shows up closer to the center of the car or even slightly toward the drivers side. Anyone have these symptoms before? Thanks Casey
FYI...I have replaced both belts and 1 tensioner and 1 idler pulley in the past year that were squeaking much more then it is now.
I had a low RPM belt squeak and it turned out to be my harmonic balancer. It seems it was wobling so much that it was rubbing the belt in places where it shouldn't, thus causing a squeak. As it was only a low RPM-squeak it may not fit your situation; however, its worth checking your harmonic balancer to make sure it's still running true.
Ah, tensioner pulley, or any of the other pulleys for that matter; good suggestion 4theboy.
The GM service manual differentiates between a "squeak" and a "chirp". I had my tensioner pulley replaced, too; however there's a chirp that re-appears from time to time. I isolated it to the idler pulley (the big one with the plastic dome over it). A shot of WD40 cleared it up.

I have the exact same problem as you! In fact, my car is at my mechanic right now being diagnosed. I just spoke with him and the problem appears to be a wobbly harmonic balancer, as 'j curtiss' mentioned. Before this, I had replaced the waterpump (leak), hoping that would get rid of the noise at the same time. Nope. I then thought the power steering fluid was the cause as the resovoir seemed a bit low, but no such like in getting rid of the noise. My vette has 107K on it right now, so I'm not suprised these problems are starting to occur.
Look at the harmonic balancer closer, that could be the root of your problem, as well.
Thank you. The sound is so annoying. My mechanic is about 1 hour away so it has been difficult for me to find time to drop the car off. I am going to take a closer look this weekend.
