Default Heat shields for plug wires?

Just wondering how many people install the heat shield socks on their plug wires after header install? I just installed LG Streets and did not put on the shields but I'm wondering if I should.

Thanks.

I use the metal shields with my header set up. GM put them on for a reason.

when my headers were put on the shields were not removed. when i later upgraded to new wires i removed the shields because the new wires were designed to take the heat without them and and they didn't fit anyway.

Sorry, guess I wasn't clear. I didn't mean "should I take off the metal shields." I was asking if the wire socks, which I'm guessing are either asbestos or some like material, should be added in addition to the stock medal shields.

When I had the LG Pros installed, I also did the "cool socks". I don't think they are actually required but I did it anyway. I see them as cheap insurance.

David,
I think I'm on the same wave length. It sounds like cheap insurance to me also.
I think I'll pick up a set this week.

thanks,

My advice is to NOT use the metal shields. I have seen numerous cases of the metal shields causing a cylinder to misfire because the spark would come through the jacket and arc to the shield. I can not explain why they would do that because they are not grounded. Never-the-less I have seen the little blue arc with my own eyes. I took the shields off and it ran perfect. I would highly advise using something like firesleeves.

I had headers installed along with new plugs and plug wires. No plug insulation, no metal heat shields and no problems.

Sounds like you need some new plug wires... poorly insultated wires (ie, broken or cracked insulation) will leak like that and cause an arc to jump, sure... (Even if it is/was a new wire, replace it) the metal shields do serve a purpose... I used mine again on my not so stock MSD wires and figure it's better that way.

My .02 cents worth...

They were brand new MSD 8.5mm on a 95 LT1. I had 3 arcing.

As I have said, I have heard of it happening over a dozen times now. If you choose to use them and you have an unexplained misfire, remove them. If you use them and they work great.

I had my headers JetHot coated and I will install the Koolsox as well. I also added a heatshield for the starter.

(My two cents) Performance products and performance vehicles should always be engineered for the "extra mile." Bear minimum will usually put you in a bind at some point and cost you more in the future.

Damn that sucks!! I have 8.5mm MSD's as well... No issues though.
Guess in that case I'd take 'em off too!

I put MSD 8.5s on and used the heat shields and they started to misfire, I removed them and the problem went away.

sounds more like a bad wire than just the fact that it was arching to the plate....You CAN get bad NEW wires from time to time...
