I have been tasked with finding a C5 Corvette for my father-in-law.
I have found a 2001 Torch Red with 60,000 miles and we are gonig to go look at it today. From the pictures the car looks to be in excellent condition and well taken care of. Asking price is $22500.
I have read that huge write-up by leaftye about the ins and outs of the C5 but I am wondering if there is anything in particular that I need to keep in mind while looking at and test driving the car?
That is a huge responsibilty! I would be nervous trying to find a car for someone else, especially a family member! So many things could go wrong! Find the right car and you will be a hero, find the wrong car and you may not live it down. Not to rip on your father-in-law, but why can't he find his own car?

Sooner or later something will go wrong and they will be looking at you

There was a recent post about an 01 coupe with 20k miles for the same price.
You can do better than the one you describe, and I agree with the previous comments about him finding the car himself.
There are plenty to choose from.

X2
I'd keep looking if I were you. With the father-in-law in tow.
He told me red, auto, preferable under 40K miles and less than $22K. Needless to say, I am having a bit of trouble finding a vette with under 40K miles and under $22K.
Well we never got a chance to look at that 2001 with 60K miles. We may go look at it Saturday.
On another note, I have been doing a little research and have read of some buyers finding 2007 C6's with around 10K miles for $34K. If I could find something like that I think he would go for it.
Having said that, if we (read he) likes this 2001, what would be a fair market value? It is an auto with 60K miles, HUD and Z51. We were thinking of offering $18.5-$19K.
We found another 2000 model Vette with just over 65k miles.
In talking with the owner, he says that occasionally the fuel gauge will drop to empty. It doesn't happen all the time though.
What would cause this and is it a fairly easy/inexpensive fix?
1st- Hello and welcome to the Forum.
2nd- If you fill in your profile, it helps answer many questions, with regards to the part of the country your in.
3rd- Its a buyers market, but he must list what he really wants. Then look for that car. You really need more than just Red & A4. Otherwise your just trying to compare apples to oranges.
Lastly- the gas gauge is a common problem and, again depending on where you live, the most recommended cure is to put a couple bottles of Chevron Techron in the gas tank.
Good luck with your search-did you look at the C5 for sale section of this Forum?
For the 2001 with 60k miles, I would not pay more than 19k, in fact 18,5 is more of a fair price. If the car had less miles, I could see paying 20k for it. My car is an 01 with about 45k (has hud and all the options) and I think it bluebooked at about 21k.
Stay away from the 2000 with the gas gauge problems. Technorn additive MIGHT fix that, but if not you are looking at a fairly costly repair as in a fuel pump ,which btw is located inside the gas tank.

I am in Tennessee.
Thanks for the welcome...
Yeah, I have been looking at the for sale section for the C5 and C6.
As far as what I am looking for? A red A4 base would be it. We don't need NAV, Z51, etc. I am looking for my father-in-law. He has little to no PC skills so researching the C5 would take more time than he has. He has entrusted me to find him a daily driver C5 (or C6 if the price is right) and his requirements are red, automatic and something that has been taken care of. Under 60K miles would be a bonus because he is going to drive this about 120 miles per day to and from work. He also does not want to spend more than $20K cash, so needless to say I am having a difficult time finding the car.
Don't be afraid to extend your search. I found my car in Florida and I live in Northern VA. A local dealer can check it out for you - that's what I did before I flew down. For that matter, you might be able to find someone on the forum to check it out for you.
If I was in the market for a used Vette I'd be looking at C6s with the factory warranty. Mid $30s for a low mileage '06
More Power
6 speed automatic instead of 4
Double Din Radio (Nav Option)
We are also looking for a C6.
There is a red 2007 A6 1LT base at a local dealer. Has 30K miles and they want $38.5 for it. Too much for that car IMHO.
If I could find a 2007 C6 with under 15K miles for around $33-$34K that would be great. I know those types of deals are out there, it just takes time to find them.

We are willing to travel a good distance from Nashville, TN for the right deal.
