One thing I love about the C6s that I hate about the C5s is the way the traction control/active handling button works. I know they sell the little boxes for the C5s that you can program to have the car start in either competitive driving mode or full off, instead of full on. But is there any way for a tuner to set how the button works? (Press once, competitive driving. Press and hold, full off)

You do not need a little box to turn to competitive mode. I believe the 2000 and newer equipped cars have a button AH/TC you just hold down for 10 seconds and you are ready to go,
Because the car goes through a start up diagnostic, I don't know if it would be possible (or wise) to be able to start the car with the switch in the "off" or "competition" modes. The stability system has saved my **** on several occasions and I usually leave it on. I would like to know should it malfunction.

He means to start it up in competitive mode. Or to start the car and have AH/TC already off without pushing the button.
Personally, I would definitely leave it on. Best safety feature our car has.
Oh, I definitely leave it on all the time unless I plan on getting sideways on purpose. I'd just like to be able to get into comp mode quicker sometimes, and I'm trying to figure out a solution that's more customizable than the laptrax box. I'm not afraid to put together and program a little chip to do it, if that's what it takes. I just don't know the details of what's going on on the car end to get it done.

If you have Active Handling (RPO JL4) - depending on the model year of your car, you can put the system into Competitive Driving mode by holding down the button for 10 seconds. It disables traction control, but retains the active handling feature to prevent the car from getting out of control and swapping ends.
If your car is an '02 or newer the system is a little less intrusive and can be set with the car rolling slowly. Earlier cars, the system was a little less forgiving and the car had to be at a dead stop before you could change the state of the system. In '02, A/H became standard equipment - before that is was optional on late '98 cars and on.
FYI - the LapTrax module that is being referred to in previous posts, will allow the system to default in Competitive Mode when the car is started, instead of the start-up default of Traction Control and Active Handling on.

Gen2 Active Handing began in 2001 (not 02). It also became standard in 01.
It can be switched on, off, or into comp mode at any speed.

Thanks for the info. I just got my 02 Yesterday and turned on the competitive feature but was not sure what it did.
Normal operation is TC and AH on.
If you push the button once , both are off.
If you hold the button for 5 seconds, TC will be turned off and AH will stay on =competition mode.
As the AH is a safety feature it'd be a brave after market manufacturer that provided a product to disable it or turn it off. I haven't heard of one that does that
My view, for what its worth is that it should be a positive decision to disable any handling device. That way you know the state of the car. Theres a healthy dose of HP down the back end of the Vette. Even so, I understand why guys want to do it, particularly on the track.
I've read too many wipe out threads over the last few years and its a shame to see these amazing cars destroyed.
Guys we've had plenty of discussions on how Competitive Drive mode works and the merits of keeping traction control on. Can we keep this on topic? I'm looking for a way to have the traction control button function exactly the way the C6 Corvette's traction control button comes from the factory.
