this is an excellent topic and hits home for me real hard. i am a stick person to the bone who was dying for a vette in the worst way and couldn't find one available due to the fact that everyone thinks their car is worth a million dollars and wants unrealistic prices for the ones i saw for sale. long story short i found a seller of a 2000 black on black with 55k on the clock but was an auto but was realistic with his price and i paid 18k for it and i love it. my girlfriend told me don't do it because in a couple of months i will regret buying it because it's an auto. the thing is it is my daily driver car here in vegas and im actually finding that im glad im driving an auto when i get stuck in traffic but the bottom line is i have other toys in the garage that are stick that i can always take out for a blast. what it boils down to is what you will be using the car for. i use mine for both business and pleasure so i don't mind. if it is gonna be a weekend toy then get a stick for sure. stick is the way to go to feel the heart and soul of the car. who cares if an auto is quicker in the 1/4 mile, it's all about catching the revs of the car going in and out of turns during normal driving on the streets with a stick. the bottom line is what do "you" like better. for me it's a stick but i couln't say no to the deal i got form the person who sold me his auto. this purchase has put me on ice and taken away the impulse to buy the first thing i see. now i can search for a 6 speed possibly a vert with a lot of patience, maybe even a c6 if i can get over the way it looks with that short hood.
When I was looking for my C5 I was pretty sure I was going to get an MN6. But I also wanted my wife to drive and enjoy the car also so I wanted her to weigh in on the decision. She doesn't have a problem about driving manual transmissions and in fact enjoys it as much as I do. However, when we test drove one of the MN6's her knee hit the underside of the dash when she clutched once and she was concerned about it. We then test drove an almost identical A4 and we both agreed that this was the right car. There are both Auto's and Manuals in my stable right now...
not for disliking automatics - just for (in a sense) agreeing it's a personal choice; but saying "wrong for me"...
instead of "wrong for everyone else"
I don't think I'll never own a manual shift automobile again. But in a similar way - like the rest of you responding - manual shifting is "not for me anymore".
It's all personal preference. Cheers to you stating you personal choice... and the middle finger for those wanting to dictate to everyone else what their life choices should be.
It's America; "freedon to choose" rulz !!!

I have a friend who insists upon driving nothing but manuals... in fact he said he would rather drive a Acura RSX Type S (6 speed only) over an automatic C5 or LS1 Fbody. I tell him he is rediculous and that automatics can be extremely satisfying depending on the car and that just because it is indeed and automatic... that doesn't mean it is significantly less car.
What do you guys think of this? For example, I was looking at a friends car, he was selling it and I was considering buying it. It was a 1998 Camaro Z28 with 48,000 miles on it (he owned it since new and barely EVER drove the car) it had chrome zO6 wheels, BFG KDW tires, SLP long tube headers, flowmaster exhaust, LS6 intake, stall converter, shift kit, it was lowered, 20% window tint, lid...He put down 369whp/373wtq and he wanted $8,500 dollars for IT!!! He no longer cared about the car and he wanted to move on to a fox body project. I told my friend and he simply said "Ew, it's an auto I don't care what it is or how cheap... it's an auto"
I'm like WTF youre crazy...
And now he is looking for a C5, he wants to spend between $16,000-20,000 for the RIGHT car. He found a 1999 White Coupe M6 with 67K on it for $19,450... and I found a 1999 White Coupe A4 with 30K ON IT! for $19,000 FIRM! No go because it's an auto...
I just don't get it! Can you help me understand...
The people that say they would rather drive anything other than an automatic Corvette are NUTZ
Mine is a 6 speed and I love it! But.....if I drove it into NYC everyday like I do with my Blazer.....it would be an auto for sure.
Originally when I went to look for my first vette I was sure I wanted an automatic because I had been there done that with the muscle cars already and this way the wife could drive it too.
But when I took each out for a test drive....well enough said I guess.

While I agree in old school principle Hot Rods and Sports Cars should have sticks, I have an 03 Vert A4 3.15, if the same car was offered side by side same except pick the tranny, I think all things realistically considered, I would still pick the A4 with 3.15 axle, I also live in So. Calif. Manually shift down, it`s fun still, drive in 3rd in the city go low to second when going by that other performance car, it`s fun,
What is it that you didn't know at the time that you discovered since that changed your outlook on you purchase? Just curious
well, since you asked......
1. i didnt know how slowly the auto downshifts.
2. i didnt know how slowly the car excelerates when you are at certain speeds.
3. i didnt know that i would take interest in a little recreational road coarse racing.
4. i didnt know that i would have this particular vette for so long and put so much money into it.
I just don't get it! Can you help me understand...
Heres my take on this sensitive subject.
Most people get auto because they cannot drive stick or do not want to put up with stick in traffic.
1. It only takes a day to learn to drive stick. 1 week of practice to learn "stopping on a hill" 2 weeks later its 2nd nature.
2. Really, how often are you in bumper to bumper traffic honestly? very rarely, so its not enough to justify that reason. and this car wasnt designed to be a daily driver, grocery getter, commuter car.
With any sports car, you are not experiencing the true potential of one unless its a manual....no matter how you slice it

Absolutely nothing wrong with an automatic car, but if your friend only wants a manual equipped car, it's his money. He's the one that has to be happy with what he buys.

that's all i've got.
That pretty much satisfied my curiosity. Thanks for the putting up with the questions

I have an A4 Corvette (3.15 axle) for two reasons. 1. I have bad knees and an M6 (I learned to drive manuals on 2 1/2 ton trucks in the Army, so I know how to drive one) would kill me inside of 10 miles. 2. Most Corvettes are autos anyway and a lot of M6s that are up for sale (used) are about ready for a new clutch. BTW, I have big fun in my A4. Its statements like yours (highlighted above) that make it sound like you are trying to dictate to someone else what is right for them. If GM thought like you did, they wouldn't sell near as many Corvettes.

I hear guys ripping through gears all the time and some of them don't sound smooth at all. Who would replace the clutch on a Vette that they are selling? Yea, I want to acquire someone else's headache. That's why I wouldn't buy a high mile MN6 and a low mileage one cost more than I would spend. As far as the driving experience, I could have the best of both worlds by simply putting a ratchet shifter in my A4. However, I have a ratchet shifter in my daily driver and the only thing it has done for me is cause me to drive faster when I use it. Not a good reason in my book.
Frankly, I'm a cruiser. I want to drive by people slow enough to get a dental exam. That kind of driving doesn't require a MN6 in order to "feel" the experience. It only requires a empty passenger seat for all the babes who wanna ride.
