Default serious HP question

I've been seeing post that are mentioning Supras developing 800+ HP to the ground. when I have heard this mentioned in the past I thought it was your basic BS. if a Supra with a 2 litter motor is getting 800+ HP to the deck why aren't vettes able to put down 1600 HP to the deck?

I've read post several times at this forum about it and I've know guys to tell me that. if it's even 1, why can't a vette lay down 1600?

There are 1000+hp Vettes on this forum if you look around.

The funny thing about the big single Supra's is how they make the hp. Look at a dynograph of a highly modded big turbo one. You'll see it hovers around 150-200hp from 0-5000rpm, then shoots straight up to a peak of incredible hp numbers at around 7k rpm, then by 8500, it's done.

The "on-off switch" syndrome commonly associated with those cars is very true, and it's largely why so few of them can run decent 1/4 mi times. It takes some incredible skill to control the car with such a narrow peaky powerband and very limited traction.

But at the same time, that instant burst of peak hp is the one reason you wouldn't want to run one from a freeway speed roll-on. That's the one environment where those cars shine.

Typical example... http://images.turbomagazine.com/feat...turbo+dyno.jpg

To me, that doesn't look like a fun car to actually drive....it looks like it was purpose built to brag about a hp #.

I agree, wouldn't be fun to drive. personally I'm not interested in a car that has to tach 7K to pull out of a parking space

are the high HP vettes peaky too?

Quite a few of those Supra's that goto the track use a shot of juice to help spool up the monster Turbo

As for Vettes I can speak for my ATI DS1C 346 that has a mere 700+ rwhp and is like stock under 3k and after that hold on until redline at 6800. So I will say blower Vettes do not suffer that problem and power is linear and increases as the RPMs build toward redline
