Default First time buyer

Hey Guys
Well I am currently and unhappy owner of a 2000 Audi S4. I am selling it right now and I already have 2 corvettes that I have waiting on me to sell my car. The first is a black 98 blk 6 speed targa. It has 78k miles and comes with an extra set of wheels and tires, all for 17k.

http://www.cars.com/go/search/detail...3&aff=national

The 2nd is a 2001 yellow with 94k miles 6 speed targa.

http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?car_id=229729380

I was wondering if there was anyway to install the HUD in a 98 model?
And I was also wondering what you guys thought about the 2, which do you believe is the better choice.

Thanks

I do believe that HUD can be installed in the ’98, but I would prefer the ’01 because they had quite a few upgrades that were not available in the ’98. I would also try to get the price down on the ’01. Good luck with your search.

How much do you want to spend?

What part of the country are you located?

FYI Differences:

1997
* Completely new, redesigned Corvette. Base (FE1) and Z51 (FE3) suspension packages.
* All Z51 cars include: Power Steering Cooler
* 97-00 C5 LS1's produce 345 HP @ 5600 RPM and 350 Ft Lbs of torque @ 4400 RPM.

1998
* Convertible becomes available
* Active Handling becomes available late in year
* The two slots of a 1998 (and possibly late 1997s) curve toward the rear at the bottom. (versus straight down)

1999
* 26# injectors substituted for 28#
* Fuel pump revised to reduce noise
* FRC "Fixed Roof Coupe" aka the hardtop, becomes available. All FRC's are MN6 (6-speed) cars with the Z51 suspension package, and are about 60lbs lighter than coupes.
* HUD introduced
* Only one line in driver's side fuel rail cover (no fuel return line?)
* Power telescoping wheel becomes an option
* Steering hardware changed to combat wandering
* Door sill trim plates added

2000
* Millennium Yellow available
* "Thin Spoke" versus "wagon wheel" design wheels become standard.
* Pup cats added to all models for LEV emissions requirements (5hp loss relative to 97-99)
* Steel swaybar endlinks instead of plastic on Z51 equipped cars
* Z51 swaybar diameters grow (25.4/21.7 to 28.6/21.7 to 28.6/23.6 (note: new rear same as Z06)
* No keyhole on passenger side doorhandle
* Passenger airbag 'off' switch added to console (light by TC/AH button)

2001
* Return to 28# injectors for all models.
* Second Generation Active Handling
* Nassau Blue discontinued
* Alternator 'clutch' pulley added on A4 cars
* New soundproofing + foam in all cars
* Smaller keyfob
* Electrochromic dimming rearview and driver's mirrors
* Lighter AGM battery
* Thickness + Material in Convertible change
* Chrome exhaust tips for coupe + Convertible
* 85MM MAF with integral temp sensor (versus 74mm with separate plug for IAT)
* LS1 cam profile changed to: .500/0.500, 198/208 on 115.5LSA (From: 0.472/0.479, 202/210 on 117)
* All Corvettes now have the LS6 intake manifold
* All Corvettes now have the LS6 engine block (windage passages in block), which includes a beefier oil pump.
* LS1 changes result in new output of 350 HP @ 5200 RPM and 375 Ft Lbs of torque @ 4400 RPM (MN6)
* Hardtop/FRC discontinued
* Stronger synchros in all transmissions
* Exhaust manifolds revised (5hp regained) - thin wall cast replacing SS manifolds
* Metal valvestem caps (late year)
* Torque Tube changed from metal-matrix composite to aluminum alloy 6061, increased in diameter from 55 to 63 mm.
* Driveshaft couplings have also been upgraded on manual-equipped models for additional strength and durability
* Introduction of the Z06, which has as differences:
* Hardtop body style
* Rear brake ducting
* Screened inlets on front fascia, without foglights
* F1 Supercar tires 265-17 front, 295-18 rear, on 17x9.5 and 18x10.5 (one inch wider, respectively
* New LS6 top-end with new style head design (10.5:1 compression, 64cc chamber), LS6 cam (0.525/0.525, 204/211 on 116) - 385hp

* Redesigned PCV system to help combat oil burning
* Red LS6 Fuel Rail Covers (FRC's)
* FE4 Z06 suspension - uprated springs, bars (30mm/23.6mm), shocks (note front spring and rear bar same as Z51)

2002

To me both cars have higher miles than I would look for.

They both seem a bit $$$$ for this time of the year.

CONDITION ,CONDITION ,CONDITION

IMO

Glad to see you're joining the Corvette world.
Personally, I think you should look for a Vette that has fewer miles on them. Not that a high milage Vette is a bad thing( I also have an '75 with over 100K) but it might soon need some attention in several areas. Not only in the engine area but brakes, suspension, etc. In short, the deal you think you're getting might end up costing more than the car is actually worth. When looking for a C5, I came across several older models with much lower milage than you've stated like the '01 at Foreign Cars Italia in Charlotte NC with only 24k miles on the clock!!!!
Good luck and shop carefully.

Wow, I didn't know that there were so many changes in 01. I think I am leaning more toward the 01 now. My price range is complicated, I need my payments to be around 310 a month, with 72 month financing of course. So I am thinking 18k or so.

My Audi is very unreliable, that is why I am getting rid of it. Plus, everytime something breaks, it cost an arm and a leg to get it fixed since it is a german car. My clutch went out and it cost me 1700 bucks to get a new one.

I am currently living in Wilmington, North Carolina. So a vette would be perfect for the weather down here on the beach.

Be patient and keep looking....you will find the right vette! Remember....it's winter, many people are going C5 to C6, it's after the holidays, it's tax time...etc etc etc...so..what I am saying is...I think if you are patient and do your homework....you should have several choices that are at a great price! Happy hunting!

'01 was a pivotal year.

Estimate pmts, $20./1000 borrowed, i.e., 18K would be $360./mo. for 60 months. That'll give you rough ideas of payments.

Trust us, especially with your first Vette and a vehicle that sounds like it will be your only vehicle. Go for lower mileage.

I did the 75K thing on a C4 and by the time I nearly had all the payments paid it had about 130K and I spent a small fortune to keep it and restore it to tip-top shape. That made it as reliable as it could possibly be.

It's much less stressful and easier on the wallet to just worry about washing and waxing each weekend, and driving it rather than not worrying about getting stuck somewhere, and trying to maintain a high mileage vehicle. Your betting odds, it's a gamble at that point. Your already into the deal for several hundred a month plus the insurance and gas, tack on an average of several hundred for maintenance per month and it could be a deal breaker when your already halfway into it.

I'm not saying all high mileage will be that way but eventually things will need to be replace and/or repaired. Its a fact. An just because it's low mileage doesn't mean it will be trouble free. But the odds are more in your favor if there is youth left in the vehicle.

Just keep shopping the right deal will come along, heck watch the Florida market its Vette city here.

All I'm saying is don't think just because it is a Corvette it will be perfect. These vehicle are like the others things break, they are expensive and you become an expert at finding the best part at the best price. Lots of folks here can hook you up with one vendor or another.

Keep yourself focused and search a little more. You'll be happier in the end.

I too would probably look for something with less miles even if it means having to wait a little while for the funds to be available. But, of those two, I would go with the '01. Just more of a car for the money.

Good Luck
