I routinely look at all the cool cars on the classic car section of ebay. There was a way too good deal on a hot rod today which looked interesting...a deal too good to be true. (I Have seen many of these before). After opening the item, there was a bit of a page skip and I had to re-log into e-bay to ask the seller if his buy it now was for real. When I tried to back out of the e-bay item there was no way to get back to the previous listings without going back to the ebay home page.
I believe some hacker embedded a link in ebay to a totally different site. Once I logged back in to ask the question, my ID and password were compromised. I had to immediately go into ebay and both change my user ID and password. I also cancelled my Pay-Pal account and e-bay account for complete safety.
The seller had good feedback, but all of that could be modeled as well. Has anyone else seen anything like this???
Yup..that's happened to me several times. You click on the car and the whole screen flashes and repaints.
Then it wants you to log in.
TIP: Before you log into anything...check what address in the URL box is there...you may not be on the site that you think you are. Usually they'll have some I.P. address and not EBAY's.
I have actually heard of this happening. One guy had his paypal account and bank account emptied. Paypal had to reimburse him of course but still, that would be horrible.
It's to bad that you have to watch everything that you do. It's no wonder that older citizens don't want to do any bill paying or electronic banking on the web.

Man, you've got that right. I don't have a computer at home because I'm lucky enough to be able to hit a few sites like this from work. I've got an entire IT department behind me, with firewalls, filters, etc. I'm retiring soon, so I'll have to get set up at home. I'm looking forward to relaxing, but not to having my computer stuff being my own responsibility....
Someone hacked into my PayPal acct and tried to convert some of my money to euros, PayPal called me and alerted me to it and put a hold on my account. I'm not sure how they got into my Paypal so I had to go reset all the security measures. I acknowledged Paypals efforts in thwarting the thieves. My story at least had a happy ending. Knock on wood! Now I have no clue how this relates to Corvettes, so moderator, if you feel the need, you can delete this.
Not the problem you describe but someone hacked my account recently and used it to fire out a load of spam. Unfortunately I was using the same password for e Bay as I was for my E Mail. Every time I changed the e Bay password they logged onto my E Mail and changed my password. Luckily I had a different password for my Pay pal. Took me 3 days before I realized what was going on.
I was lucky; all I got was some grief from people who thought I was a spammer. I could have lost money. Moral of the story; don't use the same password for multiple accounts.
Several wks ago I had email from "PayPal" that they needed to update my information. When that screen showed up, I closed it down and forwarded it immediately it the real PayPal. They answered me the next day confirming it was phishing and that their tech were working on closing it down. I'm about as computer savy as a box of rocks, so if it caught my attention, it was OBVIOUS!!! Will forward info on.

I get those same things a lot. Each and everyone gets forwarded immediately to Paypal. Get for Ebay too, they also get forwarded to Ebay...
the forwarding accounts are
Before I got my vette, I use to watch lots of cars on sleez-bay. One thing I noticed is that someone would sell a car for a ridiculously low price like $5000. There would be a "Buy It Now" image, but not a working "Buy It Now" link. The seller claimed his email ebay account was too full of messages or something to that effect and instructed all interested persons to use a posted email address. Clearly what's happening is that the "seller" stole someone's account and feedback to look credible. For fun, I responded to one of these and played dumb. The guy wanted me to pay him for half the car (using Western Union of course) which was "conveniently" overseas. I would pay him the other half once it "arrived" in the US. A couple of times, I enjoyed watching people scam the scammer by bidding $1,000,000 to foil the plot.
