Default Battery tender installation ?

So it's red alligator clip to red battery post, black alligator clip to black post (I don't have to ground it to the frame like the instructions say to??), plug it in and I'm set? Just want to make certain I'm not missing any steps, like disconnecting the battery or something.

You can use the red + and black - alligator clips or the more "permanent" ring terminals to connect to your battery. I use the latter.
Some prefer to use remote mounting of the + and - leads to reduce changing of sparks igniting out gassing from the battery. I use only OPTIMA batteries so it isn't a concern.
Read the instructions so you'll know what the different LED lights mean as the charger does its thing.

I just picked up a float charger also and I want to mount the wires using the ring connectors. I tried mounting them between the battery and the battery cable but the ring connector did not fit well.

It seems like the cleanest way would be to purchase the accessory type bolts for the cables and mount the ring connector to
the "accessory terminal". If so how do the bolts come out of the cables?

Is this the way most of you are mounting?

Thanks in advance!

I have mine hooked up the same way and no problems for 3 years and running

you can cut the old ring terminals and crimp on ones that will fit your terminal needs. will take you 2 min to cut and crimp on new ones

I swapped out the ring connectors to 3/8" and they fit over the bolt OK but it didn't look like the cable was fitting against the battery like it should with the ring in between. Maybe I'm just paranoid. I'll try it again.

Is there a reason that you don't want to follow the instructions?

You really didn't get a "float" charger, did you?

If you got the real Deltran Battery Tender, if you hook it up wrong, nothing bad will happen, the light just won't go wrong. Unfortunately, the weather being the way it is, I have one on each Corvette, plus the Harley....can't wait for spring!

The Optima is a VRLA - AGM battery. VRLA = valve regulated lead acid. The valve is there for outgassing, to let the hydrogen out.

Hydrogen is as much a concern with the Optima as it is with any other modern maintenance-free battery. Hydrogen will generally only be generated during charging -- but your battery is charging whenever the engine is running or whenever you have it hooked to your battery tender....

I use the battery tender with the cigarette liter plug. Fast easy no need to open the hood.
