Question about MAF

thanks

Any supposed gains an aftermarket MAF might offer, is done simply by fooling the PCM tune.
It works like this...the PCM is preloaded with data about the specific MAF in the car...At any given reported MAF frequency, the MAF sends that to the PCM. The PCM then references a table that converts frequency to airflow data, and from that, can determine how much air the engine is actually consuming.
Aftermarket MAF's claim to increase hp by merely altering the actual reported values, effectively tricking the PCM. It might gain a hp or two, but it's a very hack approach of accomplishing it. You'd be far better off spending that money to have someone knowledgeable tune your car proper, using real, accurate values to maximize performance.
The actual sensor is not much of an airflow restriction, certainly not more than the intake manifold itself is, and you won't max out the stock MAF's frequency capability until about the 600rwhp mark.
If/when you do find the stock MAF's limit, you'll also know the single best MAF modification you can make is simply eliminating it completely.
