Default Please Explain MAF Differences between years

Can someone simplify this for me? I have a 98 with all of the bolt ons. I figured I would look into a MAF. I know I have read that going to an aftermarket one is sometimes a bad idea without having the car tuned.
What about switching to the other year C5 maf that is larger? What is required to do this?

Thanks fellas.

97-00 used a 3 wire 75mm MAF

01-04 C5 used a 5 wire 85mm MAF with integrated IAT sensor.

02-04 Z06 used the same 85mm as the C5, except without the screen.

To use a later model MAF, you would need a 01-04 airbridge, an 01-04 air filter setup, and the harness adapter to adapt your (currently separate) IAT sensor to work with the new MAF.

There is not much to be gained by doing all this, and if you do decide to do the conversion, use a factory GM MAF...the aftermarket (like Granatelli) are junk, and tend to cause more problems than performance.

The '01 only gained 5 HP with the new MAF, the LS2 air intake and a new cam design.....

Go with the GM replacement with the IAT sensor. About a 5hp gain. Not really worth the bother

Humm thats weird I have an 03 Z06 and just the other day I pulled out my MAF to clean and I swear there were only 3 wire sensors inside of it not 5 like listed above?!? Its the original MAF with the IAT sensor in it. Does the IAT sensor count as the other two wires or something? Cant think of anything else.

And my 02 has a screen in it. Go figure. I am replacing it with a 100mm MAF though.

Yes.

By wires, I was referring to the number of wires leading to the sensor (at the connector)...not the sensing wires you see inside the MAF.

You should see 5 wires at your 03 MAF connector: They are as follows:

Pink (12v ignition voltage)
Black/white (ground)
Yellow (MAF signal to PCM)
Purple (low voltage to IAT sensor)
Tan (IAT signal to PCM)
