Hi, if I let the DIC let me know when to change the oil and it's around 12K; is this ok without changing the oil filter?
I read that it's ok if you change the oil filter every 3-5K, but wouldnt the oil come out if the filter was removed?
Thanks,
Tony
Oil filters are only good for 4-5,000 miles. If reused, they will eventually bypass dirty oil back into your engine. Replace the filter EVERY time you change your oil, it's cheap insurance.

I'm not sure if I understand your question, but here is my response.
12k miles is awfully high, but possible. Always change the filter when changing the oil!
I would never bother changing just the filter, but it is possible. You would lose some oil, but not all of it.

Something is amiss here. I doubt the DIC will let the oil go to 12k before it tells you to change it. Are you certain you looked at the mileage correctly the last time you changed it?
Either way, you can change the oil filter without changing the oil. You will only lose what is in the filter, about 1/2 quart. Why would someone only change the filter, unless it was damaged somehow.
When in doubt, change it!

With all my vehicles I was always like, well, I'm under here spinning the nut from the oil pan to drain it, so I might as well spin the oil filter also. Wouldn't think of changing one without the other, unless the filter was damaged in some way, way before needing an oil change.
I wouldn't rule out 12,000 miles. My DIC shows 50% and I've driven it 6000 miles since I changed the oil and reset the DIC. A lot of that was highway driving, and I don't beat on it too much.

The oil filter only contains a small amount of oil - yes you will lose some, but not much just taking the filter off. Personally, I'd change the oil when changing the filter.
Although many of us could go 12,000 miles according to the D.I.C. we all MUST abide by the 1-year MAX rule: NEVER wait more than one year between oil change intervals, regardless of what the D.I.C. displays.
Also, according to what I've seen in the bobistheoilguy website, a good oil filter, when used with synthetic oil can remain in the car for up to 12,000 miles. However, this statement was based upon using Mobil 1 synthetic oil and an OEM air filter. Using aftermarket filters may mean that more frequent oil changes are necessary.
If you go to the trouble to get under to change the filter, Might as well change tie oil while your down there.Leaving oil in long term is not good unless you have some good long highway runs on a regular basis so the oil gets up to temp and stays there for a good period of time, otherwise moisture and contaminants can do bad things to your oil and innards. You'd have to add a 1/2 quart for a filter change anyhow.Might as well finish the job,it's cheap insurance for an expensive motor.A friend has over 500,000 mi on a 97 Sonoma with regular 5w30 and filter every 3to 4 thousand miles.(He doesn't drive hard though)JMO

I would not hurt to change the filter in between oil changes if you are not changing the oil but every 12,000 miles. When people used to change oil every 3,000 miles, some only changed the filter every other oil change.
As cheap as oil filters are, why would you NOT go ahead and change the filter everytime?
To answer your question about oil coming out if you change the filter. The oil pan will not drain through the filter (unless you accidentally leave the engine running!), but you will lose the oil that is in the filter.

Why is it a MUST? Is the engine going to fall apart if one were to wait, say, 18 months before changing the oil and filter if the OLM wasn't to 0% yet?
