My friend just bought a 98 with the changer and when you load a disc it says ERR.I tried to run a cleaner disc though it and still the same.Is it the cartridge or the whole unit that is bad?Any thoughts.
Was it a cd that was purchased at a store or one that was burnt at home ,i know my 03 z bose system doesnt allow home burned cds to play... how crazy is that!

I have the 50th AE w/changer and my home burned cd's works with my changer. I use a 5 year old toshiba lap top and rip the musics from my itune collection. I do encounter skips when I hit a bump and statics from the speakers. To the OP, also check the cables for loose connections.
It reads ERR after I load a disc in the changer in any slot and on either side.I tried running a CD cleaner though it and same thing. It also does the same thing with a store bought CD in it.The head unit is the cassette unit. When I load the disc it sounds like it keeps trying to load or read the CD and makes a clicking sound.

careful a cleaning cd is not advised per the manual. try using only one cd in the mag that has been cleaned and replaced correctly in the mag and with the mag inserted correctly in the unit, if the trouble continues the unit or the mag has been damaged

..."in any slot"...this sounds like you're talking about a 12 disc oem changer in the trunk. It takes a few seconds after you load the CDs (shiny side up in the tray) in the trays for the changer to cycle through them. You can't load a CD and instantly play it. You can hear the whirring noise and you should see the dash icon flashing.
Once it cycles through, the icon will stop flashing and it's ready to select a CD and play music.
Some have suggested the changer might have a failed "lens" which evidently can be repaired/replaced by a shop.
Some will suggest that once the changer fails, it's better to "upgrade" to an IPOD using conversion cable connections.
As suggested above, check for loose or damaged connections at the foot well and the changer. You might disconnect the plug at the changer momentarily and reconnect.
This company was recommended to me as being a source of repair/repaired CD changers...

Both my 99 and my 94 do alow me to play home burnt CD's. You might want to try a different brand of disc. I did find that some I was using wouldn't work.

There ya go! All of the above; and as stated previously, make sure the cd's are loaded correctly.
